Apple admits nano problem September 28, 2005

So after all the hoopla over iPod Nano screens cracking for some people, Apple was kind enough to respond. Summed up, it’s pretty much:
Dear Valued Customer,
Hahahahaha.
Sincerely,
Apple Computer Inc.

OK, not really. Apple does have a nice side, since it will of course fix the ones whose screens broke which is good. Apple claims that only 1/10 of 1 percent of the Nanos suffer from this flaw. That’s a very small percentage and if true, is nothing to really respond to. For a move responsible, grown-up version of events, go here.

Man, I don’t even know what to think. I guess kids would dig this from age 0 until about the age 7 when they’ll want the VoltroNinja version or whatever is hot that season and they you’re going to upgrading LCD TVs for years to come. Nice profit model. I’ve got to admit, though, that I wouldn’t mind having Buzz Lightyear’s beheaded corpse show me its tummy. That, apparently, is where the TV lives. Availablle from novelty TV maker Hannspree, it’s priced at about £320 for the Buzz model. 101 Dalmatians and Mickey Mouse versions are also available.

The Xbox Car. We kid you not September 28, 2005

We cannot recommend this as the best use for your Xbox – you know, the one you plan to ditch like dirty dishwater when the 360 beast finally arrives – but we do think it’s very cool in a “you need to get out more” kinda way. Xbox hacking has been popular ever since the console came out years ago. However, this time, it’s been taken to a new level. Apparently this dude took an Xbox and turned it into a solar powered, Internet-controlled R/C car that has a 50-mile radius. The Xbox is running a very clean version of FreeBSD and is controlled via GPRS internet from a Nokia 6310i. It’s even got a Logitech Web-cam built-in so that you can see where it’s going. Very cute. NASA take note! These guys are the future. Why? Because they make DIY technology marvels that work from scrap, not state-of the art scrap made from the finest, most expensive materials that crumble at the first whiff of space dust.

Those poor Japanese are again being smothered under a tidal wave of uber-technology and we feel it's our humanitarian duty to insist that companies like BenQ launch some products in the UK first - just to relieve the pressure. BenQ is releasing its first “super-multi” DVD burner in Japan early next month. The DQ60 DVD recorder - which was actually announced four months ago - is going to support every DVD format. Ready for the list? Here goes: 8x DVD±R DL, 16x for DVD±R (CAV), 8x for DVD+RW, 6x for DVD-RW and 5x for DVD-RAM. Prices are going to begin at a little under 8,000 Yen which is about £40 here. No dates on when this might arrive here but you can expect it to cost at least twice that when it does.

Motorola is trying to prove that its not just about RAZRs and ROKRs. I mean, sure, they’re way cool and totally cutting edge, but look for some phones for the peons, uh, I mean masses, as well. Five new mass-market handsets were announced, all supposedly sporting thinner chassis, integrated FM radio, and TFT display. The C118, C139, C168, C257 and C261 are all candy bar phones and look pretty similar. The C257 and C168 look like the only two in the new cheapie family that don’t have a cameras (great for lawyers who can’t get their cameraphones into court rooms). Lots more detail here.

Even Toshiba has a music phone September 28, 2005

Not really known for its mobile phone strength, Toshiba is bringing out its first 3G phone and music player. The 803 is a clamshell phone (not the prettiest I’ve ever seen) with a 1.3-inch screen, 2.2 megapixel camera, twin stereo speakers and Bluetooth. There is a claimed standby time of up to 270 hours on GSM and 400 hours on UMTS. Talk time comes in at 320 minutes on GSM and up to 180 minutes on UMTS. The music player is external, btw, so it will make it easier to get to your music, according to Toshiba. Early details were let slip by Vodafone Germany last month but it now looks ready to ship in Europe.

Star Wars ‘8’ charged for piracy September 28, 2005

Eight people have been charged by US authorities with the illegal piracy and online distribution of the final Star Wars flick, Revenge of the Sith. The charges say that the defendants lifted a version from a post-production house where one of them worked and world wide webbed it the day before it hit the big screen. Albert Valente, 28, has pleaded guilty to stealing a copy from the post production company he worked at. The other seven allegedly worked for the Dark Side too. The Star Wars 8 will appear in court next month. The pirated version we saw though was in Russian and came out at a least week before it opened up on screens in the UK. Funnily enough, the so-called dramatic moments between Princess Perky Padme and Darth Jnr. seemed more convincing in Russian. No charges have yet been brought against George Lucas for a truly, crap script. More info.

Xbox = $4bn down the drain September 28, 2005
READ MORE Gadgets
How much does it cost to get into the console market? Try $4bn and counting. According to Microsoft it has sank roughly $4bn into the Xbox so far. And, get this, the Xbox division has still to turn a profit. That’s a massive loss of roughly $1bn a year ever since Microsoft decided it wanted a big chunk of the console gaming pie. In medieval times, the walls of Xbox HQ would be awash with blood and heads on stakes would line the way up to the entrance. Has no one heard of ROI? Has it worked? Well, Xbox is the number two player after Sony’s Playstation and has pushed Nintendo into third – a place it looks destined to remain. But, the gap between first and second is big. Xbox 360 will redress the balance somewhat – thanks to a four-month launch lead over PS3 and a superior online gaming service, but analysts think that PS3 will pull ahead again by 2007. Whatever happens, Xbox 360 better drag the Xbox division into the black or Microsoft will be unleashing the beancounters who have spent four years kicking cats, just waiting to get rid of that pesky, financial black hole.
