Microsoft’s X05 got underway in Amsterdam yesterday. It was billed as the first chance to, “fully experience Xbox 360, including the first opportunity to play next generation games and encounter the unique digital entertainment capabilities of Xbox 360.” So what was the big news to emerge from the event? That Peter Jackson is executive producing the Halo movie. Yep, WETA Digital and WETA Workshop will supply special effects for the film. Otherwise, Microsofties were on hand to say very little about the launch lineup for the 360. The official word is that there will be 20 games available on November 22, but only Project Gotham Racing 3, Kameo, Perfect Dark Zero, Madden NFL 06, NBA Live 06, Tiger Woods PGA Tour 06, Need for Speed Most Wanted, and FIFA 06: Road to FIFA World Cup have been confirmed. A few new titles were teased out, including the urban-themed Crackdown, but they didn’t even put a firm date on Call of Duty 2 or Gears of War.

3D Sound from iPod Amp October 5, 2005

I’m suspicious of anything with the word “Boosteroo” in its title, but looks like UpBeat Audio doesn’t mind such a ridiculous name for its new 6-ounce amplifier called the Boosteroo Revolution. Promising 3D surround sound and a “quadruple boost in audio,” the product also works with any device that has a headphone jack. Has two standard mini outputs as well in case someone else wants to listen in. The Boosteroo Revolution runs on two AAA batteries and costs $79.95.

Here’s to the Pink – a USB Flash Drive October 5, 2005

This is a pink USB flash drive that conveniently looks like a lip-stick case. It features USB 2.0 speeds and works on Windows, Mac and Linux. Good for you ladies, now you can be techie and chic at the same time. This flash drive retails fairly cheap at £10.99 (a little under $20 USD) and £1 of every purchase goes towards breast cancer care.

Powerful and pretty, the AJP D900T-X from UK notebook specialists, AJP, aims to blow most laptops away with i’s masssively powerful specs. It’s got an nVidia Go7800 GTX GPU, 3.8 GHz Intel P4 and support for 2.8GB of RAM. And don’t forget the 100GB 7200 RPM hard drive. Throw in a massive 17in screen and I’m impressed. Ok, but do we get a side of fries with that? Sure, and Bluetooth, WiFi and dual layer DVD re-writer. And if you’re game you can go for the optional TV tuner with remote. Of course, this laptop isn’t exactly light at 5.2Kg, but if it’s a desktop replacement and occasional travel partner, it could be a perfect match. Some more details.
Sonic Alarm Grenade: Ear Shrapnel October 5, 2005

You know your sibling or neighbor is going to piss you off one night while you’re trying to get some sleep. No reason to let them off easy now that the Sonic Alarm grenade is out. Complete with 3 separate noise levels, all you do is grab the grenade, pull the pin, and throw. 20 seconds later, anyone near the device will start to cry and squirm around on the floor due to it’s ultra-high noise making capabilities. Goes for about £10 - and is worth every penny. I'll have two, please.
Bend that Color e-paper Like it’s Your Job October 5, 2005

Fujitsu debuted bendable color e-paper xtreme ultra at CEATEC. The screen/paper/whatever won’t break or anything when bent, thus making it the ideal replacement for paper. Lots of visions are in the works for this new e-paper such as advertising in transit, books, manuals, and other various paper replacements. One cool feature is the ability to transfer images from a mobile phone or similar photo-holding device thingy, to a large e-paper display for possible image viewing or advertisement transfers. My question is this: How long until the porn gets released in e-paper? If it's anything like video or the Internet, the sooner it does the sooner it'll go mainstream.

Let your co-workers have that boring ol’ office calculator; you can show off a much cooler space-age version. The cleverly-named Roswell Calculator by Lexon Design has a super-sleek aluminium body with round keypads. It features an amazing transparent 2-line LCD display, as well as an Euro converter. A 1.5 V battery is included with the £32.82 (could we round that up please) price tag, and it’s available internationally as long as you’re willing to pay shipping.

Oh, I don’t know. Maybe it’s another crappy phone. Or maybe a really cool looking USB key, like an iKey, with bouncy icons. OR MAYBE IT’S A VIDEO iPOD. You know, the one that Steve Jobs recently said will not be happening because the whole world thought of it first and made it cheaper, and not white. Or maybe it’s just like a really cool upgrade for the Mac Mini. Maybe it’ll be blue or like pastel pink. You know, for the ladies. Catch the inside line, reputedly, here.

Microsoft has taken the wraps off the games that will be likely be giving us RSI over the Christmas at the Amsterdam gaming show, X05. Leading the Christmas rush will be action adventure Kameo (pictured), first person shooter Perfect Dark Zero, and Project Gotham Racing. Excitement is certainly reaching pants-wetting proportions now as all the big publishers scramble over each other in an effort to come up with the ‘killer’ game for the Xbox 360. Other big games announced – but not due until next year – that have signed up to launch first on Xbox 360 include Call of Duty 2, The Elder Scrolls: Oblivion, Superman Returns and Castle Wolfenstein. In a separate announcement, Microsoft was very pleased – as are we – to announce that the special effects for the upcoming Halo movie will be handled by none other than our favourite Hobbit, Peter Jackson and his WETA division. For his trouble he gets an executive producer slot and no doubt, a share in the gazillions it will make at the box office. Now all they need is a decent director. Uwe Boll, put your hand down.
Oakley Thump 2 not ugly shocker October 5, 2005

There are some that say that sunglasses and MP3 players should never have gotten it on, while we feel anything that can be feasibly be gadgetised should be . No matter how stupid it is. This is the depraved depth of our obsession. The original Oakley Thump sunglasses with in-built MP3 player were ugly beasts. Owners may have well just thrown caution to the wind and worn the damn Star Trek uniform in public because they screamed GEEK that loud to anyone looking at you. The new Oakley Thump 2 shades though, are a damn sight prettier and will no doubt keep our visible geek tells to a minimum. They support MP3, WMA and iTunes AAC tracks and tunes can be transferred via USB. Here’s the first decent review we’ve seen so we won’t bore you with the nitty gritty. We will say that we really like the flip feature that lets you wear them backwards indoors, so you don’t break your neck or look stupid wearing sunglasses in the house. We also like that they are cheaper than the originals with the 256Mb, 512Mb and 1Gb versions costing £200, £240 and £300, respectively.
