Ugly Watch for Jocks February 27, 2006

Unless you compete in some of those snow-trekking events where no one can ever see you, then you might not want this watch. Sometimes, modern products adopt the industrial or retro look and it works (Evoke-1 DAB radio) and sometimes it does not – as in the case of this watch, the Sports Utility Watch. The SUW is meant to be the SUV of watches, and if you’re looking for something that will kill another human being on impact, then it’s probably a fair comparison. This 1.5x2in slab of metal ,which will set you back around £90, boasts digital and analogue time, a light, stopwatch, compass and thermometer. I don’t know, but I really don’t see too many people shoving this baby under their tongue or up their ass. Then again….

Caddy In Your Pocket February 27, 2006

Not rich enough to hire a professional caddy? Crap at distances? Despite these handicaps, there is a golf product out there for you. It won’t improve your swing or aim but it might just let you screw up in style. The sureshotgps from Tee2Green is the smart way of understanding the stats of a course on the go and not looking like a complete amateur on an unfamiliar course. The GPS unit comes pre-loaded with up to 10 courses and you can download other courses you need them. So what else does it do? Well, it tells you the distance of each hole, including the distance from the front, centre and back of the green and then advises you on what club to use. It also identifies hazards on each hole by distance, allows you to record courses you play and save them to the device, and the bundled sureanalysis software will further analyse your games at the 19th watering hole by tracking stats of the game you just played. It costs about £230 which, considering the cost of most golf accessories, like very ugly sweaters and stupid pants, is pretty cheap. Via Tech Digest.

Here’s something that’s sure to turn heads at the office. The Zentai catsuit is brought to us by our fine friends at eBay (well, the seller sibao8000 to be exact). As we all know, Zentai suits are used to draw attention away from actors on stage, though much of the information on the suit in question seems to have been lifted directly off Wikipedia’s entry on Zentai. Apparently, it is “in vogue” to walk around in a skintight body suit with curved pointy horns protruding from the head. According to the seller, the suit is “very attractive and sexy” and “durable and beautiful.” Looking this cool will set you back—as of now—£23.99, though. It’s unisex, too, meaning you can share the fun with everybody whom you’re sure to attract.

This isn’t strictly a gadget—and it’s even a couple of years old—but we think you’ll forgive this weekend foray into “Oh, wow!” engineering. This bit of concrete and steel is the Falkirk Wheel, a boat lift connecting two canals near Falkirk, Scotland.
Thanks to Archimedes’ principle (floating objects displace their own weight), each water-filled caisson weighs the same amount. That allows the entire counter-balanced tip to bring boats—water and all—up or down to the next canal using just a 1.5 kilowatt-hours of energy—the same amount of energy it takes to boil eight kettles of water.
