Microsoft’s little known hardware division – yet very profitable - want some of that Creative webcam action. These babies are on sale in the US now but here in the UK, we can expect them in August. The Lifecam VX-3000 and VX-6000 webcams designed to do what many other webcams can do: namely provide decent audio and video and be easier to use.

The market for these babies is none other than the little, hardly-worth-mentioning, MSN Messenger user base of around 180 million (according to Microsoft, that is). The simplicity comes via the Windows Live Call Button on the top of each webcam. Hit it, a pop-up appears with your online friends and you just pick one to make a video call. You can also control tilt, pan, zoom and other functions from within Messenger and there’s some fun background effects to liven up video chats like snowflakes, stars and puking, drunk dwarves (ok, not that one).

The £80 VX-6000 can record high-def video and interpolated still pics of up to 5MP, which ain’t half bad. The £40 one though manages just VGA video (640 x 480) and 1.3MP interpolated snaps. http://www.microsoft.com/presspass/press/2006/jun06/06-13LifeCamPR.mspx">More
