Nokia Sues Chinese Companies For 7260 Knockoffs June 28, 2006
READ MORE Mobile phones
This is interesting news—Nokia is suing two companies for producing copies of their Nokia 7260 phone, and suing them in Beijing no less. Nokia wants them to stop making and selling the phones and pay damages.
The two companies are Shenzhen Telsda Mobile Communication Industry Developing Co. Ltd. and Song Xun Da Zhong Ke Electronic (Shenzhen) Co. Ltd., in case you've got some connection to either. We'll be interested in seeing how this one turns out. If Nokia wins, it may mean a lot less cheap knockoffs of non-Chinese products.

Sony to Ship 8GB NW-A1200 Music Player June 28, 2006

We've seen these Sony A-series MP3 players before, but the NW-A1000 models were only capable of holding 6GB. Now Sony has decided to unleash an 8GB model on the US market, the NW-A1200, which will be available in either pink or purple.
It takes just a couple of hours to charge up its lithium-ion batteries, and Sony says you can get playback of up to 20 hours on a charge. The player's form factor is fairly compact as well, where it's just 3.5 inches tall and 19mm thin. But it's not exactly light for its size, weighing just shy of 4 ounces.
It can play back WMA and AAC files as well as MP3s, and if anyone's still using Sony's proprietary ATRAC format, it can handle that, too. By far its most distinctive feature is its electroluminescent display, a 1.5-inch screen that makes it look like the text is floating on its surface. Sony says the NW-A1200 will be shipping on July 20th for $200.

Omniscient Military Blimp to Fly by 2011 June 28, 2006
READ MORE Gadgets
Forget highflying spy planes, the US military plans to send an all-seeing blimp to a height of 65,000 feet to spot enemies, watch out for cruise missiles and relay communications using a huge phased-array radar antenna embedded in its belly. Lockheed Martin is figuring out how to make the thing light enough to fly and operate at such a height for over a year at a stretch, and is looking to make it all happen by 2011.
Not only does such an airship need to be unusually light, its battery power has to be more efficient than any in existence today, where it needs to use a quarter of the weight to store the same amount of energy currently possible.
From first-hand experience, we can vouch for how perfectly a blimp functions as a platform in the sky, just sitting up there with very little energy expended. It's the perfect antenna. Thank goodness this particular device will be unmanned, because think of it—oh, the humanity—sitting up there for a year with nothing to do but stare into space.

We didn't realize there were fanboys for Firefox, but don't get us wrong, we dig the Firefox open-source web browser. We use it literally all the time. It's just that, is there really a need for a bag that says Firefox all over it? Not that this isn't a great bag; it fits a 17-inch laptop inside along with a bunch of other stuff, and has a drop-in audio pocket with a little port for your headphone cable to go through.
So, if you want to spread the word about Firefox, this looks like just the $60 messenger bag to do so. Reminds us a little bit of the $250 Adobe Messenger Bag of which we are mildly fond. Hey, if Firefox has its own bag, perhaps we should develop a Gizmodo bag . . .? Who wants one?

PS3 Games to Cost A Lot? Or Not? June 28, 2006
READ MORE Home Entertainment
Our nerdy cousins at Kotaku, of whom we are not the least bit ashamed, point an article in PlayStation Magazine where Sony Computer Entertainment (SCE) President and CEO Kaz Hirai reassures us that pricing for the upcoming Blu-ray-packing PlayStation 3 games will be, um, hopefully not too expensive. Here's his convoluted quote:
"Generally speaking, over the past twelve years or so, there has been a consumer expectation that disc-based games are maybe $59 on the high end to $39 on the low end. So, what I can say now is, I think it would be a bit of a stretch to think that we could suddenly turn around and say 'PS3 Games now $99.99.' I don't think consumers expect software pricing to suddenly double. So, the quick answer is that we want to make it as affordable as possible, knowing that there is a set consumer expectation for what software has cost for the past twelve years. That's kind of the best answer I can give you. So, if it becomes a bit higher than $59, don't ding me, but, again, I don't expect it to be $100."So, somewhere between $59 and $100, right? Or something. Why didn't he just say, "I don't know yet."?

Western Digital Settles Hard Drive Capacity Lawsuit June 28, 2006
READ MORE Storage
Take note, Apple. Western Digital is actually settling a class-action lawsuit that was filed against them. They are giving out free software to consumers who filed a lawsuit claiming the hard drives actually had less space that promised. This software is available for anyone who has purchased a Western Digital hard drive from March 22, 2001 to February 15, 2006. It isn't just some run-of-the-mill software either, the software retail value is roughly $30 per copy.
The lawsuit stemmed because Western Digital decided to interpret one gigabyte as 1 billion bytes, while actual operating systems like Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X interpret one gigabyte by the correct number of 1.07 billion bytes. This 7-percent shortfall would be like losing 5.6GB of storage space on an 80GB hard drive. If you too have been victimized by Western Digital, then you can claim your free correction software here.

The Designer Monitor Rear View Mirror attaches with double-sided tape or suction cups, and just like a car's rear view mirror, you can rotate and swivel it to frame up that perfect shot to the rear. We do, however, question the designation of "designer" on this product, since in all of its description materials, no designer's name is mentioned. Oscar de LowRenta, perhaps? We would prefer Ferrari. Available in blue, green, orange, or silver, it's $7.99.

A couple months ago we saw the Microsoft Ringcam, which was essentially a prototype version of this model, the Microsoft RoundTable. Along with this fancy device, Microsoft also unveiled a new business plank that is focused on the development of communication software and VoIP services.
The Microsoft RoundTable will sit in the middle of a conference table and give a 360-degree panoramic view of everyone involved. It also includes features to have documents and even PowerPoint slides integrated into the streaming video on the other end. It uses VoIP technologies and has included microphones. This is still a prototype, but at least it looks a hell of a lot better than their previous RingCam model. Sure conference calls are fun and all, but how about some good old fashion porno? This camera would work great!

It's getting to be that lazy, hazy time of year, when hammocks are at a premium and trees between which to hang them might not be situated right where you want them. Here's the solution: the Tropical Island Hammock. The two 6-foot fake palms and their plastic grass-like base hold that hammock in kitschy, tacky style. Although this is not nearly as exciting as the extreme hammock we showed you last week, it still has its own curious appeal. Not appealing, though, is its $8,280 price.

Do you still think there's no such thing as global warming? This $10.95 coffee mug will graphically demonstrate that abstract concept for you, because when you pour a hot liquid into it, Florida disappears, half the eastern seaboard is underwater and shorelines recede all over the world.
But never fear. Once you've finished drinking that coffee, or if you just leave it sitting there to cool off, all goes back to normal, and all is right with the world. So let's see, what do we learn from this? Do nothing, and global warming will magically go away? Intel’s Next Trick: Quad Core Processors June 28, 2006
READ MORE PC
On the heels of Intel's release of its Core 2 Duo processors, more information has surfaced about Intel's next-generation quad core processors due in the first quarter of 2007. The four-way processors, called "Clovertown" for servers and "Kentsfield" for desktops, are said to be power-hungry, sucking up 110 watts of power compared to the 80 watts of those Core 2 Duo processors introduced earlier this week.
All the newer processors by Intel are based on what the company calls the "Core" architecture, as opposed to the Netburst architecture of chips that preceeded the Core Duo and Core Solo. While these upcoming four-way Core chips will still be delivering good efficiency compared to Netburst architecture when you compare performance-per-watt, speculation has it that low-power quad core chips won't be available until 2008.

Nakamichi is an Asian brand that's known in some circles for their audio/video design style. Their Lumos player has a 7-inch screen in a form factor of 7.9" x 6.1" x 1". It supports quite a bit of disc formats: "DVD, VCD, SVCD, CD, MP3, DVD-R/RW, CDR/RW, JPEG, picture CD, CD+G".
The good news is the Lumos outputs at both PAL and NTSC, the former being Asian/European standard and NTSC being the US TV standard. Not only that, the 5.1 digital-audio output sets this on the same level as regular home DVD players.
The Lumos is kind of pricey at £280, but if you try to justify it to your wife that you're getting a home player and a portable player all in one, she may let you get away with this one. You'll still have to find a dealer to import this to you though.
