Those sneaky Frenchies are stirring up the DRM debate again with the news that Virgin France has been fined heavily for music piracy.
The company has been fined a massive £414,000 after its music retailer Virginmega was found guilty by an industrial court of illegally downloading and selling Madonna’s song Hung Up. It’s not that Mags was all that upset – this time - but France Telecom and Orange were less than pleased since they had spent a lot of money to buy the exclusive rights to the song from Warner Music France.
Even better, Virgin France didn't do it for profit but claimed that it's actions were in the interest of consumers. Concerning the judgement, the company said: “[It] confirmed the need to do everything to help build a balanced market for legal downloads". The company, and others in France and the US, have been campaigning against the growing practice by record companies of making exclusive music download deals with mobile phone companies. Vive La Revolution!
