Who’da thunk it? It seems that men and boys no longer hold exclusive rights to being lazy, tech-crazy, timewasting gits. A new US study of people that play games on their mobile phones has discovered that women represent almost 60 per cent. On top of that women comprise 61 per cent of those playing games 1-to- 4 hours a month and 58 per cent of all those that play for more than four hours a month.
The Electronic Gaming in the Digital Home study from Parks Associates falls into line with data that shows online gaming is also dominated by women because of their yen for online trivia and card games. Unsurprisingly, men are the majority players of online carnage, death and war games. According to John Barrett, director of research at Parks Associates:
“Women are the foundation of the gaming market, and as an industry, we need to cater to their preferences. This effort is key to future revenue growth because right now women generally spend little on gaming even though they like to play games and often have disposable income. The industry just needs to find a game they are willing to pay for.”
