Last week Apple announced an update to the iPod line -including the new iPod nano. Aside from getting a Crayola metal facelift that is strikingly similar to the mini, the new nano has a screen that is 40% brighter and a battery that will last all day (literally). But it's a good thing Apple keeps working on their iPods, because the non-video nano has some tough competition from the Creative Zen V Plus and the Sandisk Sansa e200 series. And, of course, the beloved 1st gen nano. Wow, he's looking mad - better be careful with that plastic casing! Disney added to its line of electronic products embossed with its magical logo with a product it calls Mix Max. It plays Disneyfied movies and music via pre-loaded SD cards that, of course, are sold by Disney. The player has a 2.2-inch screen, so tiny it's only viewable only by eagle-eyed wee ones and Tinkerbell herself, and also brings along 512MB of internal memory for the ride.

Expect the kids to be nagging you soon for this $100 player, available in three nicely-etched styles including Tinkerbell (shown here), Cheetah Girls and Forever Princess. Amid this flurry of introductions, the company will also update its Mix Stix music player ($50), raising its memory to 512MB and is also introducing a little sibling for it, the Mix Micro (with a micro price of $20) music player with 128MB of memory. Ah, Disney: Sell a kid a product, you eat for a day; teach a kid to nag, you'll eat for a lifetime.

Roulette Prediction Device Ready To Rock UK Casinos September 20, 2006

READ MORE Gadgets

roulette.jpgUK gamblers looking to get their teeth knocked out will be happy to hear the news that a company has developed a device that makes cheating at the roulette tables much easier. Costing around $1,900, the device employs a time recorder, a computer and an earpiece. When put in the hands of someone who actually knows how to gamble properly (not a newbie, in other words), the odds of winning can be greatly stacked in their favor. One estimate showed a 100 percent increase in the likelihood of winning.

The device measures the acceleration speed of the wheel and sends the info to the on-board computer. The computer then calculates where the ball will send based on the acceleration data and sends the result to an earpiece inside the user's ear canal. All very tricky, all very likely to get you thrown out—if not worse—from your local house of gambling.

Teamed up with an additional remote control Pinnacle calls the PCTV MCE Companion ($100), it works with Windows XP Media Center Edition and turns that PC into an analog and digital TV set.

The only downside? All of this HDTV must be received over the air with an old-fashioned antenna. Now if there were CableCards involved, this would really capture our undivided attention. Alas, products like that will have to wait until Vista is released early next year.

Delkin DVD Burnaway: Flash Memory, Burned Direct to DVD September 20, 2006

READ MORE Storage

dvd_burnaway.jpgWe remember the Delkin BurnAway for CDs, and now the company has released an equally-overpriced DVD version, the DVD BurnAway that lets you offload your flash memory cards onto a DVD without needing a PC.

It reads a variety of flash memory cards, such as CompactFlash (I&II), Microdrive, SD, MMC, SmartMedia, Memory Stick, MS PRO, and xD (with adapter), and burns all that data onto a DVD, and you can even span data over multiple DVDs if necessary. Hook it up to a TV or projector with an S-Video or RCA cable, and you can play slides directly from the BurnAway.

If you can cope with that steep $370 price, it's actually a versatile little device that can also double as a DVD burner when plugged into your PC via USB 2.0. We have a similar unit sitting on our desk here, and it's actually quite convenient having a combination card reader/DVD burner close at hand.

intro_quadcore.jpgHey, weren't these Intel quad-core processors due in the first quarter of 2007? Now Intel will not only roll out its quad-core Xeon processors in the fourth quarter of this year, it will follow that with a low-voltage version in 2007's first quarter.

These four Clovertown chips will constitute the Xeon 53xx family, arriving in speeds of 1.6GHz, 1.86GHz, 2.33GHz and 2.66GHz. They're all flying, too, running on a 1066MHz front-side bus, and contain a whopping 8MB of L2 cache.

Geez, isn't this processor parade speeding up tenfold? And, our only objection to those Clovertown chips was their power-hungriness, and now Intel solves that problem, too. Does this leave AMD completely in the dust? Discuss.

The higher-end BW200 packs a 500GB hard drive, two digital tuners and one analog tuner. The lower-end BR100 has a 200GB hard drive and a single digital/analog tuner.

The 1080p recorders can also do some neat tricks, such as high-speed dubbing of a hard disk recording onto Blu-ray disc, and the fancier BW200 has a FireWire port for hooking up a digital video camera and Ethernet for program guides and other Internet functionality. xbox 360 hd dvd drive.jpg Microsoft is back on the PS3 spoiler trail by announcing that a free software update coming later this year will allow Xbox 360 owners to upscale games content to the full high-def resolution of 1080p.

The patch will work in a similar way to how the 360 currently upscales content to 720p and 1080i resolutions. This is not true high-def, of course, but should still be a lot better than DVD quality.

Not only will the upgrade upscale your games, it will also upscale your DVD movies. Isn’t that just so considerate? However, if you want to play high-def HD DVD discs you will have to buy the new external drive for the Xbox, which will be shipping in Japan from Nov 17 for under $170 (or £90).

The US is expected to get it in and around the same timeframe but no details on Europe yet. One thing for sure though, it will cost a helluva lot more than £90. – Martin Lynch

Lindy is the latest company that's trying to convince consumers that gold-tipped, super-dee-dooper cables will not only deliver better video and audio quality, but they'll also cure your baldness, improve your skin complexion and give you the physique of an Ancient Greek statue. Their Premium Gold HDMI cables feature gold-plated connectors (of course, they're rubbish for the most part, especially over the short distances that most consumers run their myriad cables), triple shielding and RE-BLOK, which is supposed to reduce interference.

These premium cables aren't cheap, either: the smallest, 1.6 feet, cost around £50 while the longest, around 50 feet, cost just over £130. Then again, price gouging in the HDMI cable world is fairly common, as pointed out by our very own Charlie a few months ago.

But hey, buying gold-plated cables helps save the environment.

It naturally records 1080i, though, so remain happy, if not giddy at those prospects.
