Solar Powered Wireless Speakers September 25, 2006

WirelessSpeaker.jpgHope you've got plenty of light if you want to run these wireless, solar powered speakers. (Alternatively, you can just plug them in, but where's the fun in that?) The speakers themselves are rated to have a 5-watt power output, so don't expect to be turning them up to 11 any time soon. That said, the wireless is supposed to have a range of up to 50 meters (164 feet in real measurement terms), so this isn't a complete gimmicky piece of garbage. The speakers are also encased in a weatherproof exoskeleton of doom, so they can safely be used outdoors for the most part.

So if you've got a hankering for some wireless speakers that'll work with your myriad audio devices, be prepared to spend around $150. Mind the limited supply, however.

Fujfilm FinePix S5 Pro DSLR: See You Next Year September 25, 2006

fujifilm-finepix-s5-pro.jpg
Fujifilm gives us a long lead time on its S5 Pro, a DSLR with a 6.17- megapixel CCD that the company has enhanced with what it calls "Super CCD double pixel technology," giving it a claimed 12.34 effective megapixels. Is that anything like double secret probation? Let's just call it a 6.17-megapixel camera until proven otherwise.

The S5 Pro's design takes a few obvious cues from the posh Nikon D200, and even uses the Nikon F-mount to let you use all those great Nikkor lenses. Plus, there are some of the latest whistles and bells such as face recognition and an 11-point autofocus system. We wish its 2.5-inch viewscreen were larger—shouldn't 3 inches be a minimum? But everybody knows the real pros don't use those viewscreeens, anyway. Yeah, right.

Fujifilm says we won't be seeing the S5 Pro until "early 2007," and isn't telling us how much it will cost yet.

Kodak officially announced its EasyShare Z710, a camera that we've already seen available for pre-order on Amazon, but is still notable for its $299 price and honking 10x zoom with a 7.1-megapixel sensor.

We're not crazy about its paltry 2-inch viewscreen, but at that low price for all that lens glass, who's complaining? Besides, we're finding its rather odd appearance strangely attractive. Look for it to ship in the US around the first of November.

Creative Zen V Plus at 8GB? September 25, 2006

zenv_plus_8gb.jpgZe're hearing a morsel of a rumor that has the Creative Zen V Plus flash-based music player catching up with the latest iPod nano, bumping up to 8GB of capacity. If it's able to do that, it will be only the third flash player to hit that 8-gigabyte mark, taking its place among the nano and the SanDisk Sasa e280. Now if Creative can just make the Zen as thin as the nano and somehow top its user interface, it might actually be competitive.

tiny_phone.jpgWe've shown you tiny phones before, but this is getting ridiculous: the Xun Chi 138 is scarcely larger than an AA battery and it weighs just two ounces. Too small to even dial, it requires you to use a stylus on a touchscreen and plug in a headset to talk and listen.

Since it only supports Chinese character recognition, we won't be seeing it stateside anytime soon, but before it's shipped here the company might consider learning how to spell the word "megapixels."

Panasonic Air Filter Removes Bird Flu Virus September 25, 2006

birdflu.jpgRemember how bird flu was supposed to be the next great pandemic, sentencing humanity to an unfortunate, if not untimely, end? Fear not, for Panasonic has created a filter that they claim is 99.999 percent effective in removing the virus (plus others like SARS and "normal" influenza) from the air we breathe. It uses what Panasonic has christened Super Alleru-Buster technology to do the dirty work of removing pathogens from the air.

Panasonic also hinted that the Super Alleru-Buster technology can be applied to other materials, not just limiting it to traditional air filters.

itraxfront.jpg Wannabe DJs, listen up. Forget vinyl. Old Skool might Rule but the DJs of tomorrow will not be carrying cardboard boxes filled with LPs in the back door of the local hop.

They’ll be packing one of these. The iTrax Mixing Console from Gemini DJ lets you dual-dock two iPods with each iPod channel sporting a 3-band rotary EQ control with gain and cut features, mic input with 2 EQ controls and two phono/line convertible inputs for hooking it up to other music sources like turntables or CD players.

There are lots of other DJ-related features that I don’t understand but for those that like to turn their bedrooms into the Ministry of Sound, you know you want this. The best bit? It costs around £100.– Martin Lynch

Jim Jannard, founder of Oakley sunglasses, and the man behind the high pixel count, Red One HD camcorder has enemies. The camcorder, which is capable of ultra high-definition (4,520 x 2540 pixels) video in a £9K camera, had some prototypes and docs stolen from Red HQ last night. Since all competing gear is no less than £50K, industrial espionage isn't out of the question. Jannard is offering a reward of £50K to find out who stole the cam, and also relieves our pixel-hungry video junkies by saying that the theft won't throw off their '07 launch plans. Thanks for the tip, Curt.

Chrome Robot TV Stand - TMI September 25, 2006

Eventually a man's remote will control everything, until then, he'll need to settle for a TV stand. The Chrome Robots TV Stand can raise your TV 30cm with the touch of a button, or change its viewing angle up to 45 degrees. Other hi-tech features include a digital lit watch with time, date, chronometer and alarm.

Chronometer with date and time? Seriously? Is this needed for anyone who watches TV? Most cable boxes auto configure with the proper date and time...and also manage to display the information pretty well...just like my VCR (gasp). We understand that Izyasam TV Stands Factory (Turkey) wants to stand out (no pun intended), but adding a clock randomly to something doesn't inflate its value. And as for the adjustable viewing angle, most people who can afford to drop big bucks on an entertainment center can afford a TV that you can already actually see. But don't let me stop you from buying it.

I hope the big car companies are paying attention. Using two mopeds, £1000 and a little ingenuity, good Samaritan Jory Squibb built a cozy 2 or "1.5" passenger car that can get 100mpg highway and 85mpg city. Sure, top speed is only about 50mph, but that's plenty fast for cruzin' the strip for babes...ecobabes. The moral of the story comes from Squibb himself:

"Isn't it sad that such a simple vehicle, which could be mass produced for £2500 or so, which awaits no fancy fuel cells nor high-tech breakthroughs, isn't available to the public?"

Well said. Hit the link for a complete how-to.

The DR-BT30Q is a long needed overhaul of the bored Bluetooth headset styles of the present. Intended for use with a music phone, the DR-BT30Q look like a nice pair of headphones but support a quasi-hidden microphone as well. But why stop at phones? Because they are Bluetooth and non-proprietary, you can look forward to some stylish Skyping - and annoy those book readers at Starbucks without looking like a wannabe pop diva. Batteries are built-in and last 11 hours for music/voice and over 100 hours in standby. If they sound decent, we're sold.

It's the fully-hackable, nay, encouraged-hackable Linux flash memory video recorder/web server/whatever-you-want machine offering some nice cash prizes to innovative users.

Apparently reader tnkgrl has gotten the OSD to strip down and be photographed in what she delicately refers to as an "unboxing". Yeah, and that happy-finish massage artist is really my "chiropractor". This stuff is gadget-smut of the best kind. Hit the jump for a few pictures we stole from her collection.

Ok, so maybe we messed up on the Japanese maple leaf, but we know a black Xbox 360 when we see one. The above ad is featured on at least one Gamespot page if you keep refreshing - which has been confirmed by the extensive Gizmodo weekend research staff (all me of us). Is this simply a photoshop mishap? Is this an early leak? Is this just a freak accident from a wormhole? My money is on early leak. A black 360 would give the Xbox a nice push going into the holidays. And Microsoft could offer early adopters a black faceplate so we can pretend to be cool.

Revo Power: Put An Engine In Your Bike September 25, 2006

revo.jpg A bike with an engine? Now we’re talking. Bikes are great, especially in these Destruction Of The Planet days, as they can help raise your Green rep, make you feel all cuddly inside and make you instantly shaggable to hot Swedish environmentalist twins.

OK, maybe not that last bit. The only problem with them is that they require a lot of effort and few people want to arrive at work sweating like a racehorse. That’s why we like the Revo Power – which we covered at launch back in May. The Revo Power is a motorised replacement wheel that runs on two stroke fuel and can get your fat ass up to 20mph on the flat. More importantly, it will take the grunt work out of hills.

You stick it on the front of your bike since it’s only three ins wide and despite it weighing 15lbs, it does all the hard work and you get 200 miles to the gallon. It will set you back around £200 when it launches next year. Even better, you can see it in action.. Watch the video here at Techeblog. -Martin Lynch
