This week Intel announced "Classmate PC" - a budget computer for emerging markets (translation: for the poor and destitute with more discriminating tastes than the MIT OLPC model). The laptop features the Celeron "eduwise" processor with 915GMS chipset, 7-inch WVXGA (800x600) screen, 256MB DDR2 SO-DIMM memory and 1gb of flash memory for storage. The system will run Windows XP and have a standard Lithium Ion battery.

The "sub-£200" packaging is not as impressive as reality: these notebooks will range £110-£150, depending on foreign taxes. Nothing like a little philanthropic competition.

When will it be out here in the UK?(sorry olpc but the eduwise features more than the 2B1)

I was thinking of getting it for my child, to help him learn about computers.
