Despite all the talk of missing ship dates and possible delays, the Microsoft Vista team has gotten their OS gold. *clap clap* Good for you guys.
Windows chief Jim Allchin posted a cryptic message this morning to his blog that read, "It's time," signifying either Windows has gone gold or he was about to be party to only the 2nd male birth in the history of humanity (the first re-won his Governorship last night).
Although consumers won't be able to get their hands on the new OS until January 30, 2007 (just confirmed by Microsoft), corporate customers and internet pirates will be sitting pretty long before then.

Sony's new LCD projectors are packing enough lumens for you to OD on. We're talking 4,000 lumens of brightness here, trumping even Panasonic's new PT-AE1000U.
The projectors use Sony's BrightEra technology to ensure that more of your image ends up on screen despite the time of day. One complaint, although they're business projectors, we wish both models packed higher resolutions. The FE40 comes in at 1,400x1,050 while the FX40 maxes out at 1,024 x 768. Our Wall Street friends don't need super-powered beasts to run their presentations, but a little more wouldn't hurt. The projectors will run you $7,950 for the FE40 and $6,150 for the FX40. They'll be out in December and January respectively.

Panasonic Shoots for 1080p with PT-AE1000U Projector November 08, 2006

CES is still months away, but Panasonic is throwing down hard at today's pre-CES event in NY taking the wraps off its first 1080p (1920x1080) projector. Just a week ago we gave you our impressions on the PT-AX100U, and now the PT-AE1000U makes the jump from 720p to 1080p and lets you plug in two HD sources thanks to its dual HDMI ports. Its 11,000:1 contrast ratio dwarfs the PT-AX100U's 6,000:1 ratio, but the PT-AE1000U can only produce 1,100 lumens of brightness (the PT-AX100U goes for a slightly higher 2,000). Pricing hasn't been set yet, but you can expect it to be north of the PT-AX100U's $3,000 tag.

The folks at Orbitcast have taken the wraps off Sirius' unannounced InV receiver. Still, it makes for an easy way to jump on the satellite bandwagon. We just wish it supported Sirius' universal docking architecture, but since it doesn't you'll have to make do with the wiring.

Design-wise, Panny's ToughBooks have always been a little rough around the edges. In an attempt to fix that, the new eLite W5 now comes in seven different color tones ranging from Merlot to Blueprint (Galaxy Black shown). We think the system is still under powered (it's packing a 1.2GHz Core Solo processor), but for running basic office apps, the 12.1-inch laptop is highly portable weighing in at just over 2 pounds. The rugged notebook is priced high though at $2,339. Dual core fans will be able to get the $2,569 eLite Y5 starting in December which squeezes in a more acceptable Core Duo processor and bumps the screen size up to 14.1 inches while gaining only 1.4 pounds.

Apple Macbooks Get Core 2 Duo Chips, I Yawn November 08, 2006

Before the first cup o joe, Apple dropped the word on fresh Macbooks. The major improvement come in the form of Core 2 Duo chips clocked at the same 1.87 and 2.0 GHz speeds as the old Core Duo CPUs. They claim they're 25% faster than the old Macbook's chips, but lets see...When the Macbook Pros were said to be 39% faster after the upgrade from Core Duo to Core 2 Duo, they turned out to only be 10% faster. So, I am expecting these chips to be little more than the typical speedbump-like refreshes that PC laptops go through. My guestimate? In overall performance, we see less than 5% in speed jump.
The other upgrades: Larger allotments of RAM in the standard configs, up to 200 GB of HD, and a dual layer DVD-burning Superdrive. That's it.
I will declare it: The golden age of mind blowing Apple computer hardware announcements are dead...until the next keynote.

The good thing about digital photo viewers is that they allow you to quickly erase unwanted people from your home without resorting to a big fire in the garden. The downside is that they are still quite expensive.

In the past 24 hours a number of gamers have reported to certain games sites that Play.com – a major online retailer – has told pre-order customers that there may not be enough Wii to go around.
The company has allegedly claimed that there will be a shortage for the console underdog and that Christmas for many may not be all that cheery after all. Neither Play.com or Nintendo have confirmed or denied the reports but here’s the note that one Wii shopper (allegedly) got:
“Due to a European shortage of the Nintendo Wii Consoles, we regret to inform you that Play.com will be unable to supply your pre-ordered Nintendo Wii at launch. As an Official distributor of Nintendo products we are guaranteed more stock before Christmas, but Nintendo have informed us, along with all other official Nintendo retailers, that the console will not be freely available until next year.”
If true, then it scuppers all those reports from Nintendo that there would be none of the shortages expected with the PS3. If any of you know more, let me know.-Martin Lynch

Apple Not Happy With Japanese Sex Aid gPod November 08, 2006
Read more Gadgets , Press

The makers of a sound-activated vibrating sex aid, a two-man company in Osaka, Japan, have managed to get Apple all riled up. The reason? They've named their gadget the gPod, after "the G-Spot and jii, the Japanese word for masturbation." Stuck inside the cooter (the official medical term), the gPod connects to iPods, phones or music players, and apparently vibrates in sync to the audio.
Apple started fighting the Japanese company when the latter started applying for trademarks around the world, eventually sending a Japanese lawyer and repeated requests to stop using the gPod trademark. The company laughed off Apple's requests and said they would fight if Apple ever decides to sue.
Apple Computer Inc., meanwhile, is, unlike gPod users, keeping tight-lipped about the case.

Not everyone wants to purchase an expensive DSLR camera just to take pictures of our friends' weddings and vacations to Reno—but some still want the option of tinkering around with DSLR functionality on occasion. Here are three sub-£800 cameras: the Sony Alpha A100, Canon Rebel XTi and the Nikon D80. Which one's the best for you? It depends what you want.
If you're looking for better image quality, the Canon is the winner. If you're looking for quicker shot to shot speed or startup to shot speed, it's the Nikon. The Canon also had less noise and more dynamic range, but the Nikon performed better in low light. However if you've got troubles holding your camera still, the Sony is the winner in image stabilization. If you're looking for which camera looks the best (subjective), they anoint the Nikon as the king.
The Sony Alpha A100 is intended for buyers who don't plan to buy more advanced equipment soon. The Canon certainly could be, and the Nikon is not just an entry camera, it's an appropriate backup body for prosumers and pros on a budget.

Wacky Wednesday is off to a good start: Camelbots. Meet a robotic invention that may actually make the lives of many children a whole lot better.
The odd looking contraption, called KMEL, were designed by Swiss company, K-Team, and are actually in use in the hugely popular camel races in the Middle East. They weigh just 26Kg and cost around £2,900 each. Even better, they work. Like me, I thought this was all to do with creating something lighter and cheaper than a human to win your hump-backed dashes. Happily, I am wrong since the goal is a lot more noble.
Children have long been the main jockeys on camels but the sad fact is that many – thousands – have been kidnapped or illegally sold into the sport from foreign countries like India and Pakistan. The robots are part of the solution since places like Qatar have now outlawed the hiring of child jockeys.
Since June 1,075 boys, some as young as four, have been returned home to their own countries. The robots are also in use in the Oman and the United Arab Emirates.-Martin Lynch

Franken-Elmo: Man in Virgina Turns Tickle Me Elmo Guitar Into Working Guitar Hero Controller November 08, 2006

With Guitar Hero II in stores today--the faithful have called in sick and are already shredding, no doubt--we found a man who clearly puts the Hero in Guitar Hero. Mike Smith spent a series of nights transforming his 2 year old's Tickle Me Elmo guitar into a fully functioning Guitar Hero controller. This was no simple transplant--the-guts-from-GH-controller-into-Elmo-guitar either. Smith actually used the wiring from a PS1-era DualShock for the Franken-Elmo's inner workings.
The Elmo guitar only has four fret buttons instead of the traditional five, which means his daughter can only play the game up to the medium skill level. "I didn't think she'd have a chance to get beyond that point anyway," Smith explained.
To activate Star Power, in Smith's words, "You have to press the Elmo head button."
No word yet on Smith's daughter's shredding abilities.
