Beatles-branded iPod in the Works? November 27, 2006

First it was Bono and now it's The Beatles. Fortune magazine is reporting that Britain's EMI Group (the Beatles' record label) is close to making a deal with the house of Jobs. There's talk of bringing The Beatles' catalogue exclusively to iTunes and even using one of their songs in an iPod ad. But what's even more interesting is talk of a Beatles-branded iPod. Personally, I prefer my Beatles on vinyl, but in the long run this will only spread their tunes to a new generation of listeners. Sorry Zune fans, looks like the Fab Four have already found a new home. – Louis Ramirez

It's Wii-Day+8 in the states, and gamers across the land are simultaneously discovering one thing: they're wildly out of shape. Yup, it seems that many gamers have gotten a bit more than they bargained for regarding how vigorous playing the Nintendo Wii is. One girl described it as "harder than playing basketball" while another complained of sore muscles. You know how Nintendo responded to these complaints?

Up until now, Mac OS X and Linux users had been left out of the social—that is to say they haven't been able to use the Microsoft Zune with their operating system. "Until now" because the library libmtp is actually able to read the Zune's crazy filesystem on other, non-Microsoft OSes. How big a deal is this?

Did Sony Short-Change PS3 Consumers? November 27, 2006

According to an analyst at American Technology Research, Sony shipped less than half the number of PS3s at launch than it promised. P. J. McNealy at ATR claims that as little as 125,000 units were made available for the US launch, instead of the 400,000 Sony promised.

If true it’s a real kick in the nads for all those lunatics that queued for days and still managed to go home with no more than a cold, or a mugging, for their trouble. He said:

“After further review, our research indicates that Sony's PS3 opening weekend shipments were below our already lowered expectations, while Nintendo's Wii numbers remained in-line... [Sony's shipment] number is below our previously lowered expectations of 250k to 300k. We previously expected SNE to be able to still make a calendar year 2006 North American and Japan shipment number of 2 million, but those numbers are now under review.”

“To be crystal clear, we don't expect it likely that SNE will update any of its hardware numbers before it reports its December quarter in late January. We believe that the December NPD report of North American November retail hardware is shaping up to be 125k to 175k, but outside of NPD and other local (Japan) market reports, we expect SNE to remain mum and focus on delivering units to retail.”

Don’t expect an official Sony comment though since there’s an all-important share price to think of.-Martin Lynch

Xbox 360 Trucks Hijacked – Twice In A Fortnight November 27, 2006

xbox-360-hd-dvd.jpg PS3 and Wii have had their own reasons for UK launch delays and unit shortages but Xbox 360 wins the style prize: hijacking. Last week a truck full of the cherished 360s worth around £750,000 were hijacked shortly after leaving the depot in Staffordshire.

Ironically, there was a another 360 consignment hijack at the same depot a week ago when units worth £260,000 were nabbed. Anyone else thinking ‘inside job’ raise your right hand now. Crooks waved down the truck, beat up the driver and drove away. The depot is conducting internal interviews now. A Microsoft spokesperson, speaking with The Times Online, was characteristically quick to get a plug in for the console:

“The Xbox 360 is Microsoft’s latest, most up-to-date console. It was one of the first next generation consoles because of its features and the power it holds. It is quite an in- demand gadget for Christmas.” -Martin Lynch
