DIY Lucid Dreaming Device Makes Your Dreams Come True, Just Not In Real Life November 29, 2006
READ MORE Gadgets

Lucid dreaming is the ability to realize you're dreaming and then actively control what you do, like flying naked into the president's office or winning the ball game with a nuclear touchdown or whatever crazy crap you people fantasize about. It isn't an easy thing to do, but there are people out there hell-bent on making their dreams enjoyable, I assume because their waking lives aren't that exciting.
The best way to get yourself to lucid dream is to send yourself a signal while you're in a deep sleep, generally via a flashing light of some sort. It's tough to send yourself a signal when you're asleep, so an enterprising young lad who goes by "natetrue" went and built himself a lucid dreaming mask. Designed to flash you with lights about 5 hours into your sleep cycle, old natetrue claims it works beautifully.
The best part? He's now selling kits so you can make your own for $30. Get your PJs ready, because I think there are some supermodels that need saving from a volcano… in your mind. –Adam Frucci

Would You Watch Ads For Free Downloads? November 29, 2006
That’s one of the questions posed by the British Internet Broadcasting Company (BIBC) in a recent survey and the answer was: Yes - just.
It seems that many of us really are as cheap as chips and can be bought for a fish supper or, in this case, some free downloadable videos from the Net.
The BIBC survey found that over half would watch ads if they could download free videos and nearly three-quarters of 18-24 year olds claimed they prefer the idea of an advert-based system. Paul Hague, managing director of BIBC, said:
“There is a huge potential here for content owners and aggregators to make larger profits through an increased number of downloads, for advertisers to tap into a new captive market, and of course, the consumer gets what he wants for free.”
However, a less tightfisted minority of 34 per cent said they’d rather pay to avoid adverts. I’d have to say I side with the Grumpy Old Bastard (GOB) minority who think adverts are the spawn of Satan.

The guys at Labrats have a video up on how to increase the quality of your Skype calls. For both the video-phobic and the work-bound, here's a summary of what they talk about:
1. Set your router to give your Skype PC a static IP address.
2. Open a Skypish port to that static IP.
3. Give this port number to skype.
4. Set priority to that port over other ports/PCs. Only applicable if you have a router that supports this.
All straightforward stuff that may help you if you're having some quality problems with your Skype calls.

The Annoy-a-tron November 29, 2006

If you've got a professor, a co-worker, or sibling that you really, really hate, this Annoy-a-tron is the perfect thing to drive them up the wall. The small-ish gadget fits discretely under desks, in bags, or in closets and lets out a short beep in 2 to 8 minute intervals.
We had a cellphone run low on battery and beep every few minutes, and since we have about 57 cellphones here you can imagine how hard it was to identify the source. This is that idea taken a step further—just enough to drive someone batshit insane.– Jason Chen

At the start of this year Samsung showed off its very cute MP3/speaker combo, the YP-K5, which managed to be slinky, useful and undeniably different.
Today, we have a shot of what’s looking like its little brother, the delicious YP-K3. Resembling, but even more planed looking than, the iPod nano, it’s certainly one for those looking for a little style, without a certain fruity logo.
It certainly looks like the speaker from the K5 has been given the boot, but that’s only to be expected if it’s going up against the plethora of other skinny nano wannabes.
It has a 1.8in OLED screen, FM tuner and will probably arrive in 1Gb, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB versions. That’s it for now though - no dates, no price. Will keep you posted. -Martin Lynch

Is This The Ugliest 'Green' Car Ever Made? November 29, 2006
READ MORE Gadgets

My God! This is the latest green, planet-friendly car concept from Venturi. Either it’s been beaten for a week by the ugly stick or it was deliberately designed to look like a cross between the Model T Ford and an oversized golf cart.
This was recently exhibited alongside the excellent Venturi Fetish, the first production electric sports car, and despite the Spongebob Squarepants design, it can be powered on a wide range of energy sources.
It has a small 22hp (16kW), 50Nm electric motor which is juiced by the 2.5 metres of solar cells on the roof. UK drivers worried about the lack of sunshine can take solace from the turbine on the roof which turns with the wind, generating some extra energy. Plug it in at home for a full recharge. It has a range of 50km and, believe or not, goes into production next year with a price tag of over £16,000.
