Rumor: Ultra Thin 12" MacBook Pro December 4, 2006
READ MORE PC
Another day, another Apple rumor. This one takes the form of a razor thin MacBook Pro. MacScoop claims that their "sources" have confirmed a thinner MacBook Pro in a 12" widescreen form factor.
Unlike most of the other compact laptops available, the MacBook Pro will supposedly still sport a built-in optical drive and will also be equipped with a dual-core processor. It should fall somewhere in the $1700-1800 range. Still uncertain though is the release date. From what info is available all signs are pointing to around a February release. Whether that means a MacWorld announcement and a February shipping date, or a February announcement nobody knows.
All I know is that this couldn't have come at a worse possible time, as I was just getting ready to sell my PowerBook and upgrade to a MacBook Pro. But what I really wanted was a smaller form factor with decent power. And this rumor is baiting me hook, line, and sinker.- Ben Longo

Wedding Gown Made of 12,500 Condoms December 4, 2006
READ MORE Home Entertainment

Last Friday, December 1 was the 19th World AIDS Day, and an enterprising seamstress in New York decided to commemorate the big day with a very special wedding gown. Consisting entirely of 12,500 individually colored and stitched-together condoms, the result is quite fetching.
So with the average sex frequency of married couples holding right at 98 times per year according to a 2001 Durex Survey, this supply of condoms ought to keep the average married couple child-free for about 127.5 years.
There was no word about whether the condoms had been used or not before being sewn up into this dress, but with all that stitching involved, their use after the wedding ceremony was not recommended. – Charlie White

Samsung Ultra Video Phone: F500 Plays DiVx December 4, 2006
READ MORE Mobile phones

Samsung rolled out its Ultra phones, and here's the F500, the video specialist of the line that's the first mobile that can play back DivX movies. On its 2.4-inch screen, it can handle all the usual suspects, too, such as MPEG-4, H.264, WMV and AVI, storing it all on 400MB of internal memory or up to 2GB on a microSD card. It's also packing a 2-megapixel camera.
What an innovative idea to make a swivel base that doubles as a stand, letting you set it on an airplane tray table and view it without having to hold it in your hands all the time. But what's with that big honking antenna? Seems like that could have been hidden away. – Charlie White

iBook G4 Charger Bursts Into Flames December 4, 2006

We certainly wouldn't want this iBook G4 charger spontaneously combusting next to a stack of old newspapers, but then we wouldn't be gingerly coaxing it to start on fire, either. We're not sure what to make of this video, but one thing's for sure: the four-year-old charger could make a pretty good firestarter.
But when you notice the aluminum foil spread out underneath the charger, you can be sure this was not exactly an unexpected occurrence. Something's fishy about this. – Charlie White

"No, the other night when you said my cancer was karma punishing me and rehab doesn't excuse me forgetting the milk."
"Right! Now I remember!"

I understand some people want to create the feeling of arcade controls, but this homemade(?) Wii/Gamecube joystick may take up as much room as the cabinet it should be attached to.

Crack Your Nuts With Darth Vader December 4, 2006
READ MORE Gadgets , Home Entertainment
Oh, how the mighty have fallen. From ruling the galaxy with an iron fist to cracking nuts, this pricey household addition is even more embarrassing than the Dark Vader Tater.
Meet the Darth Vader and Yoda nutcrackers from Hammacher Schlemmer. These are limited editions carved from wood and hand-painted to make them look, frankly, ridiculous. Still Yoda is almost life-sized at 9.5ins while Darth looms high at 18.5ins and spends all day tapping Yoda on the back of the head really quickly to make him look around.
If wooden effigies of sci-fi characters tingle your Gadgetometer, then be my guest.
Still, with price tags of around £140 (Yoda) and £190 (Darth), you must really love your nuts.

LaCie Huby – Connectivity With Style December 4, 2006

I like LaCie. As companies go it likes to be a little different when it comes to designing storage and peripherals.
Whether it’s the uber-cool Lego brick HDDs or the Porsche-designed heavy metal drives, it manages the impossible by making storage somewhat sexy.
And now we have Huby, a bulbous flower pot of connectivity. This cute number sports four USB 2.0 ports, 2fireWaire ports, a clutch of cables (5 USB, 3 Firewire) a USB fan, a USB light, a USB extension cable and a FireWire 400 extension cable. What more do you need? Expected later this month for around £45.-Martin Lynch

Freelander 2 = UK's Biggest iPod Dock December 4, 2006

The king of 4x4s, Land Rover is taking the wraps off the Freelander 2 this week and if you still haven't decided which is the best iPod dock for you, I can recommend this one.
A snip at £21,000 (rising to £34,000), this particular iPod dock sports a 2.2litre turbo-charged diesel engine and is classed as a mid-sized 4x4. It is also more geared towards the mummies and tweed jacket set than the farming crowd. The optional audio connectivity option - i.e. cradle, sits on the dash and you can control your selections with the steering wheel controls.
You can even plump for rear seat LCD displays and wireless headsets but it's the dock that's the real puller.
So now the nation’s moms can nod happily to their Coldplay tunes while driving their ONE child a mile down the road to school where they can complain with other moms about the terrible traffic congestion.

Sure this pen will run you $69 and only holds 128MB of storage, but the design is a fresh revision of a classic. A fine ballpoint with replaceable ink cartridges, the pen also doubles...err...triples as a PDA stylus as well. Though, to be fair, we're not certain if that means you are expected to just press the screen with the pen all Wall Street ghetto style.

Why didn't we think of this? As you all know, wet is bad for gadgets. A good way to avoid problems? Wii: Vertical or On Its Side? December 4, 2006
READ MORE Consoles

After scoring a Wii this morning, I finally took a break to hook it up. My joyous unpacking was short lived as I made a harsh realization. The Wii is too tall to stand up in my entertainment center.
So instead, the Wii lies limp noodle on its side, shriveled insignificant next to the powerful Xbox 360. And then I realized just how genius the Wii stand is. By placing a slight angle on a fairly sad looking optical drive, Nintendo created an iconic...dare I say timeless design.
And I don't get to enjoy it one bit.
