ps3-clear-black-front.jpg After a dismal launch last month with far too few units, Sony is now claiming that it has sorted out the manufacturing problems that have turned the introduction of the PS3 into the kind of shambles that business schools will be using in their courses for decades to come.

But all of that is in the past, according to Sony. Official spin maestro, David Karraker, said the company is still on target to ship one million units by the end of 2006, and 6 million by March.

NPD recently claimed that Sony only managed to ship just under 200,000 last month – half of what Sony claimed it could do. Figures from American Technology Research were even less flattering. Karraker said:

“While initial day-one launch shipment goals weren’t achievable due to early manufacturing issues, those problems have been resolved and we do remain focused on having one million PS3s in the pipeline by December 31 2006. We will continue to utilise airfreight delivery for PlayStation 3 to assure a steady stream of systems for North American consumers through the end of the year.”

Wow, ‘airfreight’. As opposed to what other mode of rapid transport from the Far East? Boats, camels? Although, with the UK launch postponed until March, I’m beginning to suspect a new reason for the delays. -Martin Lynch

Well, normaly transportation of big cargos it's made by boat, it's much cheaper, the strange it's by air, it's not usual to transport big cargos by air.

They might well transport things by air if they hadn't manufactured the PS3s in time to get them to the destination points by boat.

I think Microsoft have done well with the Xbox 360 and Nintendo even squeezing the Wii into most markets before Sony have been able to release the PS3 globally.

In a 747 cargo plane they can probably carry about 100000 units as the payload is 400000kg ish, If each ps3 is about 4 kg, then its quite economical.
