Seagate just got pipped to the post by Hitachi, which has announced that it will launch a 1TB hard disk drive in the first half of 2007.

Just hours later Seagate, which has been leading in the desktop HDD capacity war, confirmed to DailyTech that it will be doing the same. Seagate already has the only 750GB HDD and both of the new monster HDDs will also be based on perpendicular storage technology. In an email, Seagate said:

"Seagate’s 1TB hard drive will be our second generation 3.5-inch hard drive to feature capacity-boosting perpendicular recording technology, and it will use fewer heads and discs than similar-capacity products we expect to see from our competitors. It is clear that fewer heads and discs, along with our proven perpendicular technology, can increase drive reliability, and also reduce operating temperatures, power consumption, noise, and weight."

No pricing details yet but the Hitachi one will cost around £300.

Sony Revamps Vaio Notebooks January 5, 2007

c2 blue.jpg Sony hasn’t had much luck on the notebook side of things in recent times thanks a minor battery kerfuffle throughout last year. It’s 2007 now though and the company has just announced a Spring refresh for its Vaio range.

All new Vaios will now come with Windows Vista Home Premium or Windows Vista Business in
the case of the SZ4 and TX3-Series.

There’s not much detail on what ‘new features’ the new ‘hip’ C2 range will sport except that there’s a new colour with the silly name: rediscovery blue. Why? Because if it was just ‘blue’ then it would feel out of place alongside timeless black, nomad grey, karma white, free spirit pink and natura green. Obvious really. If you’re still scratching your head in bewilderment, Sony spells it out like this:

“A mix of soft blue tones with storm greys, the new colour evokes skies and seas and feelings of
self-awareness and stimulation.”

C’mon, keep up at the back. The key question is, would a colour make you part with your money? -Martin Lynch

HANNSpree has made a name for itself making novelty and kids TVs but the company has upped the style stakes for 2007 with a range designed to appeal to the more serious TV buyer. After all, not everyone wants a football TV in the house.

The new models include the retro-looking HANNSlounge, the trendy black & white HANNSvibe, the minimalist HANNSnara and the spacey HANNSwing.

The HANNSlounge boasts a walnut wood shell, leather effect front-end and deer-horn shaped chrome stands. It comes in 26in, 32in and 37in models with prices ranging from £679 to £999. All of the new TVs are HD Ready with HDMI inputs and a respectable screen response time 8ms.

The prices are certainly in line with what the main HDTV brands are doing but with the added bonus of owning a very individual looking TV. Still, as with all products, I recommend testing one out before you part with your hard-earned cash.-Martin Lynch
