We said we've been watching the W950 for a while even back in early 2006, but Sony Ericsson's finally making it available for online purchase. Not subsidized by any provider, the W950 is going to be the king of smart Walkman phones in both cost and features.

The phone has 4GB of internal storage, TrackID Music Recognition (record a few seconds of a song, then ID it later), Bluetooth, A2DP, Push Email, Quad-band GSM and UMTS, and runs off of Symbian. The Walkman software is 2.0 and goes all on top of a 2.6-inch touchscreen display. No price yet, but should be available soon.

CES 2007: Apple iMac Rebadged 'XP' January 8, 2007

microsoft sabotage.jpg

At any big show, there’s going to be a certain amount of one-upmanship or, for a more appropriate word, sabotage. And at CES 2007, the biggest gadget-fest, there’s no shortage of dirty tricks on the go.

At last night’s Sony conference, there was a suspicious amount of hammering, drilling, crashing and even very loud movie demos that only seemed to kick off as the Sony execs opened their mouths. The fact that Sony’s big stand is surrounded by rivals might help you decide coincidence or foul play?.

And then we have those poor, unprotected Apple iMacs down in the South Hall which someone figured would look better with a littler decoration. No one is accusing a Microsoft employee of anything here but this is low-tech sabotage at its best/worst.

What I can’t figure out is why the culprit only rebadged one of the 8 there? My guess he was caught by some Macolytes and had the crap kicked out of him. After all, you know how psychotic er, passionate, those

Sony announced 4 new HD camcorders that we got to check out at their booth.

HDR-HC7

This is an HDV-based camcorder, with a 3MP CMOS shooting stills up to 6.1MP. It has a 2.7" LCD...and is pretty standard. Its less-loved sibling, the HC5, has a downgraded 2MP CMOS allowing for 4MP stills Interestingly, the lower end camera also features more digital zoom, as if Sony believes cheaper consumers will be impressed by the pixel-screwing zoom.

Then I took a look at their DVD camcorders...

sidelink.jpg Microsoft and Interlink have introduced a Sideshow-equipped Bluetooth remote they have ingeniously dubbed the SideLink. Vista Media Center controls are all squashed onto the handheld, giving you control over music, videos and even television scheduling/recording via the 2.5" color LCD screen. Now if only they could invent a device that would prevent you from losing it in the couch.

Surprise! PS3 Ships 1 million in US After All January 8, 2007

sony_ps3_3.jpg There was a faint whiff of relief last night when Sony announced that its PS3 actually managed to hit its sales target of 1 million units in the US by the end of 2006.

The company had a goal of 2 million globally but there was no mention of how well, or not, the much delayed console was doing elsewhere. The news is undeniably good for Sony since it managed to shift only 197,000 units at launch instead of the 400,000 it had predicted. Delays, delays, and more delays have plagued the arrival of the Xbox 360 killer but hitting the 1-million mark, as predicted, means that Wii and Xbox 360 will soon be able to hear the PS3 tidal wave coming from behind.

With a disaster-littered 2006 behind it, it will be interesting to see if this is the start of some good news for the company.

Anyone with an ounce of audio appreciation would not let a one-speaker surround system into their living room. I don’t give a damn how many cluttered wires it would clear out for me. That said, my wife would gladly accept anything that would make the living room look less like an electrical repair shop. And she’s not alone.

Philips has joined the ranks of vendors now offering a one speaker surround sound system. Yamaha kicked it all off with its high-end YSP series but there is a concerted push now to offer pseudo-surround as a decent replacement for a proper five-speaker surround set-up.

The Philips offering is the HTS8100 SoundBar using its own Ambisound home theatre system. It is 5in thick, very good looking and boasts 5 amps and six speakers on either side of the glass panel which also houses an upscaling DVD player. It can be your this spring for £700.

What do you give yourself as a reward when you manage to flog your millionth glowing TV? Why a diamond encrusted one of course.

Philips joined the ‘Bling Anything’ crowd at yesterday’s CES Show here in Vegas by announcing that it has shipped its millionth Ambilight TV set. To celebrate it unveiled a one-off version, the 42in Diamond FlatTV, a HDTV encrusted with 2,250 diamonds accounting for about 225 carats of the shiny little buggers. The bling work was carried out by New York jewellers A.Link.

It will be touring the world this year at various shows but only because I couldn’t fit it in under my jacket. Jump now for some more pics.-Martin Lynch
