Anyone with an ounce of audio appreciation would not let a one-speaker surround system into their living room. I don’t give a damn how many cluttered wires it would clear out for me. That said, my wife would gladly accept anything that would make the living room look less like an electrical repair shop. And she’s not alone.

Philips has joined the ranks of vendors now offering a one speaker surround sound system. Yamaha kicked it all off with its high-end YSP series but there is a concerted push now to offer pseudo-surround as a decent replacement for a proper five-speaker surround set-up.

The Philips offering is the HTS8100 SoundBar using its own Ambisound home theatre system. It is 5in thick, very good looking and boasts 5 amps and six speakers on either side of the glass panel which also houses an upscaling DVD player. It can be your this spring for £700.
