There was a faint whiff of relief last night when Sony announced that its PS3 actually managed to hit its sales target of 1 million units in the US by the end of 2006.
The company had a goal of 2 million globally but there was no mention of how well, or not, the much delayed console was doing elsewhere. The news is undeniably good for Sony since it managed to shift only 197,000 units at launch instead of the 400,000 it had predicted. Delays, delays, and more delays have plagued the arrival of the Xbox 360 killer but hitting the 1-million mark, as predicted, means that Wii and Xbox 360 will soon be able to hear the PS3 tidal wave coming from behind.
With a disaster-littered 2006 behind it, it will be interesting to see if this is the start of some good news for the company.
