Blu-ray Goes Limp For Porn January 12, 2007

There’s an another interesting show on at Las Vegas at the same time as the CES 2007 show and that’s the AVN Adult Entertainment Expo (AEE). It’s interesting this year for the less obvious reason that porn film producers say that they are being blocked from moving their content to the high definition Blu-ray format. Why is this important?
Anyone old enough or have read a little about the early [and current] success of the Net will know that porn funded pretty much all of it. Porn was also a deciding factor in making VHS the format of choice against Betamax in the video tape format/player wars of the late 1970s and 1980s. Ironically, Betamax was also developed by Sony.
Digital Playground, a porn production house has said that it is being forced to opt for HD DVD because Blu-ray disc manufacturers are refusing to print the movies because Sony has told them ‘do it and you lose your licence’. Allegedly.
Others in the porn industry like Bangbros. and Pink Visual have already standardised on HD DVD, citing cheaper costs, and many others are expected to follow.
So, what do you think? Is banning porn from Blu-ray going to hurt the format?-Martin Lynch

Good on Sony, get that rubbish out of our houses!! Honestly who really cares that it wont be on Blu-Ray - hell people can get it on DVD if they are that sad and have no friends!
looks like sony has shot itself in the foot again, porn is a massive industry and sony need that kind of support if its blue ray disc is going to survive
"Zed's wrong baby, Zed's wrong"
Like porn is only for sad people, Zed ASS!!! I would like to support B-Ray but What? Without porn? Forget it!!!

No Porn, No BluRay
And just yesterday I was reading an article about how Blu-Ray was probably going to win this thing in the long run. I was really happy as it's the bigger format. But without porn, they will die a fast death. Porn gave us VHS, popularised DVD and holds up the net. Goodbye Blu-Ray, we only knew you for a short time.
This will be the final nail in blu-ray's coffin,....shame.
Sony are crazy, my prefrence is blueray by doing this their risking a great deal.
Thats fine! Im not buying a blu-ray. HD DVD it is!
Why do Sony find it their responsibility to decide what is right and wrong for their format? its a data storage device, people will store what they like on it, and being that the porn industry is as large as it is, this is probably the stupidest move they could have made.
RIP Sony Electronic Entertainment, though I hope you stay in the TV (& PSP!!) industry...
If true (and perhaps even if not true, now that the FUD is circulating) then it's not so much porn per se that will kill Blu-ray, it's the fact that Sony will be seen as exercising control over what is distributed on the format. Any Sony are a content producer themselves.
And where does "porn" stop and "adult entertainment" start in any case?
In 2 years time, there will only be the die hard fans of retro filth, that will be watching in on DVD. The new wave will be IPTV. A greater cariety and a much smaller chance of the missus finding the case tucked behind the LCD. Seriously, it is inevitable that film is going to go the same way as music, so I dont really see what the issue is.
Having wondered for months who would win this [format] war, I find it extremely ironic that it will not be the public or the Hollywood studios who decide who wins but a short-minded policy by a company that clearly has absolutely no idea how to compete in this market.
Whether you like porn or not (and I see no reason not to like it) it's not up to the disc manufacturers (or patent holders) to decide what goes on them. Leave this to the market. If this policy remains in place, Sony have themselves ensured that their "format" doesn't become the eventual winner (again!)
The simple fact is, nobody is not going to buy Blu-ray discs because porn *is* printed on them, but plenty of people will not buy blue-ray discs because porn *isn't* printed on them! Sony need a lesson in simple economics.
When will people realise that Blu-Ray is not only Sonys but there are other companies in the consortium which would have agreed to the block on porn.
I am sure that any families looking to buy junior a games console would be gratified to know the kid wont be able to get hold of a Blu-Ray porn movie (OK, so porn comes in many shapes and sizes) but Thank You Blu-Ray consortium, well done.
Whether you like porn or not, I agree with Mike Woodhouse, this is the dictatorship of Sony that should be pointed at. If HDDVD did not exist, one industry would be left without a way to express itself. What's next on their agenda? Ban violent movies?
For anyone looking for comparisons of the HD discs, try this...

It is a historical fact that Video didnt take off until the porn industry started adopting it. By blocking porn on Blu-Ray Sony may have added abother nail to their coffin.
Blu-ray = Betamax
HDDVD = VHS
Nuff said !
I am astonished that in 2007 we still have living individuals that postulate people who have an interest in porn ' have no friends', probably the words of a abused child. Then we have individuals that come out with ideas such as ' families looking to buy junior a games console would be gratified to know the kid wont be able to get hold of a Blu-Ray porn movie' the legal term for this kind of inane rational is known as a non-sequitur.
So how does junior get a Blue ray disc with porn on it in the first place, dad!
Then if not blue ray then I'm sure HD or DVD or the Internet etc... will do!
The flawed thinking of this mad could be ripped apart again and again. But these are the people that think up these schemas that amount to mere despotism. We need not to take these individuals with a pinch of salt but hunt them down and remove them from society. there logic is so bent that they actual warp common sense and if allowed to procreate, pass on this disease to future generations .
Anyone know the name of that babe in this ad.
Oh yes! I wanna know, too! Sweety pop!*
Im fine with my 360
Debbie Does Dallas Again — in Blu-Ray and HD-DVD
No porn on Blu-ray? What are you talking about? I already started collecting...
Your boobs are sexy next time show all your boobs and pussy so i could get horny.
What can we say? blu-ray will die because of the strangle hold of the production-line supervisor on content creation and publication. Only a moron would agree to limit his own invention, and HD will win out because it HASN'T limited itself.
Sure... 'junior' wont be able to watch porn on the blu ray player, but as if the families who can afford the stupid $$$ amount they are demanding for their [limited] technology dont have PCs. Anyone can get a hold of a memory stick and store whatever they want. I mean, at 11 years old I had already figured out how to remove internet history and cookies and my recent documents histories on the family PC- and those of us who didn't know, we TAUGHT!
I really never have seen something hott hott hott like you. your'e the best the best sexy girl in the world. youre tits are excellent
I really love you, I really love you.
Nothing else mathers.
Blu-ray isn't going anywhere. They have too many major studios behind their format. So what that porn made VHS the standard over Beta... that was a big mistake, because Beta is a superior format. Sony doesn't need the porn industry. Blu-ray is here to stay.
maybe Sony is doing something it knows will lose because it has made a bet in the market. It is like the basketball player that bets against his own team, then misses the shot. Or like the movie the producers. A failing product can generate more money than a winning product. And on top of it, Sony gains a little more political favoritism from from government and nonprofit groups that like politically correct 'family values', and have the power because they don't pay taxes.
Blu-ray is the better format anyways...supported by more manufacturers ie PS2 toshiba..etc etc and its a bigger capacity disk, faster data transfer and well a better concept than HD DVD.... porn is for internet..download you lazy bastards blu-ray FTW
what the hell? Porn is ***** crap. Its for some 40 year old guy living in his mom's basement because he couldnt get any. seriouly, does porn even play an important event in our daily lives?
I don't think this is an issue of whether you care for pornography or not. The issue isn't even whether a format can be the standard without the aid of pornography. The issue here is one of civil liberties. Who is Sony to say what a consumer can and cannot watch in the privacy of their own home? Can you imagine the response we'd see if a government stepped in and tried this kind of tactic? They'd be called Fascists. Say what you want to about porn, but I'll take the freedom of choice.
"what the hell? Porn is fucking crap. Its for some 40 year old guy living in his mom's basement because he couldnt get any. seriouly, does porn even play an important event in our daily lives?"
Yes, it does, billiions of dollars a years worth. Your a sad individual that obviusly leads a sheltered life.
Im 20, and I watch porn whenever my roommate decides she wants to. So other then the random entertainment, (like I use it for) you could also use it for spanking the money. (unless, like you, your balls havent droped)
Hell, al these porn haters just are angry becasue they dont want to belive the average male penise is actually bigger then their 3 inches.
It shouldn't but if it does its all good.
HAAAAAAAAAAAAAA THOSE R NICE

Obviously Sony haven't learned a thing since their beetamax format failed for exactly this reason.
I can't believe that this news came out on January and the argument is going on. It depends on your choice whether you want to watch porn or not, but I haven't watched porn and I might not know the feelings of people that have.
i like to be one of the porn stars and i like the way they people pose in the position
I like the tits.
Bet-Max died because VHS was cheaper and porn companies could get their hands on it, a move forced by economics rather than morals as far as I remember but a valid point either way.
I'm not here to argue the morality of pornography but to the person who said
"Good on Sony, get that rubbish out of our houses!! Honestly who really cares that it wont be on Blu-Ray - hell people can get it on DVD if they are that sad and have no friends!"
Obviously it's not in your house, which is fine, but I find it highly presumptuous and self-righteous of you to say "our" houses as though you have an equal share in the homes of those who do consume pornography.
These are all interesting points. My point is that I don't want to see porn in High Def anyway! Who wants to see pit-marks, and cellulite, and implant scars?! I want the illusion of perfection.
lol im 15, i bet i have seen more porn than anyone here..,
i want to see it in high def, that way when you come across something that is perfection, you can appreciate it even more...
nice tits :p
This is why I haven't bought a ps3 or xbox360, and I won't until there is a dominant format, HD or b-ray, I would be pretty pissed if I bought a ps3 and blue ray had lost.
i for one am glad about this why should i have to pay for some expensive format that i do not really care about anyway.dvd is enough.blu ray is on its way out hd-dvd will become the choice of the consumer although i am not rushing out to buy any of the two and if i do it will only be for my computer to use for data backup.let sony be fools the are not the most moral people around anyhow just go and do some research on them and see what you find out.
Well if we are analyzing blu-ray..I guess its the fact that Sony has a huge following in the video game market....the PS3 is on the rise and better games are released each day. Even if Bluray players don't sell you know sure as hell PS3's will. The PS3 has Blu-ray included...so most households are gonna have blu-ray capability wether they buy the bluray player or not.
Bluray discs will be on shelves and sell well regaurdless wether or not they produce porn on them or not. Would sony make more money by tapping into the market? Probably....but they will make plenty money without the market anyway.
At least this gives HD a chance to survive a little longer till Discs are rendered obsolete by new technology.
