The Apple iPhone is going to dent your bank account a bit more than expected. The 4GB model will come in at a shade under £600 while the 8GB could be as much as £660 according to some early, pre-order prices on Amazon Germany [thanks Jan]. This compares to approximately £255 and £306 in the US.

When you’re finished choking you might also want to consider some of the other things that are taking the shine of the latest ‘hot’ mobile phone. Most of these are confirmed, while others fall into the ‘maybe’ category.

- The iPhone will be 3G when it arrives in Europe but it will not arrive for a year – not the end of 2007 as expected.

- It will be a closed device and will only run software released by Apple.

- It will use Apple’s DRM software FairPlay which, ironically, no one thinks is fair, at all. This will help tie people into bought music from iTunes, unless they opt to play DRM-free MP3s.

- Apple could win the right to use the iPhone name in Europe, thanks to a loophole says Outlaw.com.

“Trade mark specialist Lee Curtis of Pinsent Masons, the law firm behind OUT-LAW.COM, has found a legal loophole, though, which could strip Cisco of its European rights. He told technology law podcast OUT-LAW Radio that in Europe a person can lodge a revocation application against a trade mark registration if the trade mark has not been used for the past five years.” Read more about that here.

It seems that even after its arrival, the coverage of everything iPhone will be intense - I’ll keep you updated on the main stuff.

That said, less than a week on from its big launch, is the iPhone losing some of its appeal?-Martin Lynch

Surprise surprise.. nothing new there then.. we always get the $ sign changed to £ anyways.. I wasn't seriously expecting the phone to be the same price as in US

£600 for a phone that wont even play my 'borrowed' music.... screw that!

Posted by Andy | January 15, 2007 11:52 AM

It is going to sell, but it wont be huge.

its clear the joining of phones and mp3 players has to happen, by the summer i can see lots of better choices out.

Ummm.... you're comparing a subsidised price (thanks to the 2 year Cingular contract you have to sign) to a "provisional" unsubsidised price. Hardly fair.

Amazon.de are being very naughty by listing a SIM free iPhone. I believe that Apple confirmed that there will not be an unlocked version.

Is that £600 with a contract?? In America its $600 with the 2 year contract so if it was sim free £600 then it's not actually a bad deal...

It's normal for pre-release pricing to be sky high - even though it's unlikely Amazon will get the device.

Where did you get the 3G and Euro Release info from?

and a couple more points:

1. It's bound to be able to play MP3s etc. just like the iPod.
2. Closed system doesn't mean that we can't develop applications for it. Just like the PlayStation and XBox are a 'closed' system I think Apple will add an Applications section to iTunes (they already have the Games section) where customers can by add-on software. Yes it's probably be DRMed like the music.

Steve Jobs has confirmed 3G for the iPhone, just not when, but analysts at Ovum have said it will have to have it before a Euro launch.

4GB or 8GB isn't enough space right now, let alone in a year's time. My current phone has a 3.2MPX camera with proper flash, 2MPX in 2008 just won't cut it. Come this time next year this thing will be far too low spec'd, pretty interface or not.

Can Anyone Say "Hackable"..Lol.

Posted by Sparrow | January 15, 2007 04:50 PM

couldn't agree more with martinL. apple really should get this thing released early this year or it might just be a flop.
why do we get so stitched up with late release dates??
waiting to see how the LG ke850 stacks up....

Posted by Mark | January 15, 2007 05:54 PM

That price would be EXCELLENT.

It's similar to the network-free price of the HTC Universal, which goes for £130 withg contract....

Posted by Paul Allen | January 15, 2007 07:22 PM

This article is nonsense. £65 between a 4gb and an 8gb? Don't think so!

Amazon Germany is crazy doing a preorder whithout any product specs or network details for Europe. Who in their right mind is going to preorder one just now?

£600 for one without a contract yes possibly but not with one.

Posted by Greg | January 15, 2007 07:32 PM

£600 sim free in my opinion is ridiculous let alone with a contract even with the Apple fanatic screaming inside me BUY ONE BUY ONE! £600 is just way to much for an extra £150 i can buy a macbook for christ sake. Really if it is that price which hope it wont be its just to expensive. Also given how technology advances and how many of you have mentioned this phone is getting old and its not even released yet.

There is one fundamental problem with Apple and the iPhone sold with a contract. Apple is not directly present in all countries in Europe or the world. Sure the UK, US, Japan, rance, Germany etc markets are big but Apple will not have the penetration that Nokia or Samsung have. To me living in a country where Apple is not directly present other than with a distributor, it means no iPhone as it has meant no Macbook Pro. Unfortunately, there is no real choice everywhere. iPhone without an unlocked version means another Nokia for me and a good percentage of the world population. I wish this company went trully global.

Nice referal link. Probably not Gizmodo's - but I can't be bothered to find out.

"Im Angebot von Amazon.de seit: 17. August 2004"

2004?

This is a modified existing page, or worse - a scam.

Nobody can possibly know what deal Apple are currently screwing out of the carriers on our behalf.

I'm going to guess £349 and £429. Based on entirely nothing whatsoever. But it WILL have a '9' at the end. I guarantee it. For free. And I didn't just make a packet out of your referal link.

This will not be the price of the iPhone. You can't compare the American price, which is subsidised and includes the 2 years of phone contract up front, with the UK price, which will be subsidised, but won't include two years of phone contract up front, as in the UK we pay monthly for our contracts. You'll find that they will partner exclusively with one particular mobile phone company, and Amazon will definitely not be getting their hands on it. I'm expecting the price to come in at about £299 - £399 depending on which model you go for. Real bad show Gizmodo.

the iphone is the best gadget/phone i have ever seen i am already at the shops

it Is Really dear mind like some 1 has sed it rob cost half thatto makee it and u want like half profit y noh like 360 somethink like that but noh that much YOu wont sell much of it unless ppl willin to buy a phone like that 4 that price and they just MAD !

Posted by shaun | February 24, 2007 12:11 AM

The nokia n95 is finally available on a pay monthly contract in the UK. To see a list of online retailers stocking the nokia n95 visit http://www.nokia-n95.co.uk

To be honest with you, I don’t thing that this “phone” will do well. Apple will always find a way of encrypting all their software so that you cannot virtually debug it. Apple plans to make “borrowed” music from the web obsolete and this is one of their mediocre attempts to do so.

Don’t get me wrong, it looks like a really good and creative “phone” but even at a whopping price of £600…we are in for an immense movement of either mass refund or Apple outlet boycotts. I think apple has done well serving and providing innovating software’s and hardware’s with high reputation on deliverance and execution in terms of their computers and ipods. I think that they should keep their success and leave the mobile phone league to the professionals.

I WANT ONE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I LOVE IT ?????!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Posted by Eva | April 18, 2007 07:27 PM

I don't think it'll cost that much by the time it arrives. I think it'll be aroudn 490-540 pounds sim free. 250 on a 40/month contract.

Posted by Steve | May 10, 2007 01:33 AM

well it was always going to happen that apple would not convert the price from, $ to £. And you have the choice of using itunes music which you have to pay for and using the iPhone. or instead using something like a SE walkman phone which i can download free files from file sharing programmes. I know which one I'd choose.

Will an iPhone purchased in USA work in Europe?

Posted by Winifred Ann Scarfe | May 25, 2007 10:57 AM

Omg, why are there so many ppl dissing this product. Clearly its going to kick ass like the iPod.

And thus Microsoft will take another blow to the junk from Apple.

Ooooooooooooooooooo burn, take that you dissers and Microsoft religioust type.

£600 for a phone is ridiculous.
THe phone however looks and sounds very very nice. I've researched what it can do which is impressive.
The only drawbacks for me are that
1) It can't play any music that ive downloaded. (which is probably all of it)
2) the price!!!!!!

If they brough out the iphone for lets say a profitable £350-£430 then i'd consider it because im sure there's a way you could hack the phone to get it to play your downloaded music, everythings hackable nowadays.
Although im definately not paying £600 for a phone. Id rather save another £200 and buy a macbook or a nice new laptop, jesus, for that price i could go on a weeks holiday!

Posted by marekmoo | May 31, 2007 10:47 AM

I think that the new iphone is brilliant and apple as always released products never short of perfect cant wait for the release as going to buy two.price is steap but it is way better than your average phone

Posted by lee andrews | June 16, 2007 07:42 PM

and where exactly did you get all this information from.. if you ask me half of it is all made up!

apple have not even decided who there will partner with in the uk... so how do you know!

if they have released their partner it would be on blogs all over the place.. but no only this website seem to think they know everything! very doubtful dont you think!

Posted by Jonathan | June 21, 2007 12:00 AM

£600 sim free is a high price. How much does it actually cost to produce the phone? Less than $100 i suspect. The UK consumers are being fooled into thinking a contract is required because the phones are very expensive. Another example of rip off Britain. I live in CHina and do not expect to be paying £600 sim free, probably £200.

I wonder how convenient texting or emailing will be on this screen - I reckon it will be a bit difficult to type without buttons.

Posted by Philip | June 27, 2007 01:24 AM

nothing on apple website says it will be sim free.only at & t contracts.however on 29th june we will know more im sure.ive registered for further info and would fly to states to pick a couple up if sim free.bet ud pay for your trip if you wanted to sell in uk.....

Posted by david honor | June 27, 2007 10:47 PM

nothing on apple website mentions sim free.only on contract.at&t.we will find out for sure on 29th....

This article like many written by Apple-haters is very misleading.. YOU CAN PLAY ALL OF YOUR MUSIC (stolen, borrowed, whatever), I know because I have an iPhone. It's just the tracks you buy from iTunes at $0.99 that only play on iPod/iPhone.. you want a DRM-free song to play in any other crappy MP3 players out there, FINE, its $1.29 on iTunes... THE CHOICE IS YOURS.

I'm sick of reading all this nonsense about the iPhone from people who haven't even held one.. Use one for a couples of hours or days and you'll realize that anything else is sub-standard.

Too much hype over a pretty thing that does less than half than other smart phones do, with limited storage and locked environment. Not to mention that by the time it will be in EU it's gonna be dated. Stupid policies by Apple only because they want to maintain an "a la creme" kinda high class target group. This is so 80ies man, move on!

The reason electronics are expensive is because the companies have to make the money back from the millions of pounds of research and development of the products. It doesn't matter what it costs to make. Just wait and it will go down once the company has covered its development expenditure.
