Average UK Download Speeds = 2MBps February 22, 2007

Thinkbroadband.com has just completed a massive survey of broadband Internet speeds and the average we get is 2079KBps (2.03MBps).
The sample size was 365,000 users who took the site’s online speed test between 6pm and 10pm over the course of four months. Personally, my download speed sucks and I pray nightly for 2MBps.
The big news – albeit no surprise - is that many people on services being advertised as ‘up to 8MBps’ aren’t getting even close. Something to do with the fine line between ‘marketing’ and ‘damn lies’.
That said, many lucky users with Be managed to get average download speeds of around 21MBps. It’s thought this is because of ADSL2+ technology and people being closer to the Be exchanges. For that kind of speed, I’d live inside one.-Martin Lynch

Russians Invent TeleAlcoholics With a USB Shot Glass February 22, 2007

Not content with teledildonics, the Russians have come up with a design for telealcoholics. Apparently Russians drink a lot. And they link to drink socially and in business situations.
In this case, this USB shot glass allows two parties to drink together over the internet, notifying the other person just how much booze is left in the glass. This last part is important, since it's apparently rude not to finish the shot in Russia.
Now businessmen can seal deals over the net instead of in person, which frees them to do a lot more drinking and a lot less traveling. – Jason Chen

In the days before secondary brake lights were mandatory, Winky The White Cat was the thing to get to indicated to cars behind you that if they don't slow down, they'd get really intimate with the back of your vehicle. Unfortunately, Winky went out of sale nearly two decades ago.
So what did Jalopnik do? They built their own. Named Wanky, this cat was made from part of various junkers, wires, and a poor orphaned stuffed cat.
The result? A cat that scares the living bejeezus out of kids in the car behind you. – Jason Chen

Art Lebedev's Verbarius Clock Tells Time Pretentiously February 22, 2007

Art Lebedev's apparently as bored of the Optimus keyboard as we are, which is why they're releasing so many weird products lately. Their latest, a clock, is a timepiece that shows you the time in "writing".
Yes, instead of digits or a bunch of hands, it says "midnight", or "two sixteen a.m.", or whatever time it happens to be. Cool, yes, but worth $158 (or $183 after September 1)? Probably not. – Jason Chen

PS2s For £50 At Asda - Run! February 22, 2007

I kid you not. Leave your desk right now, ignore the calls for frothy lattes and cappuccinos and find your nearest Asda because they are flogging PS2s right now for £50. Hats off to Asda then, considering the supermarket chain recently dragged the cost of DVD players down to a stunningly low £9.
The PS2 is still a big seller for Sony, despite all the PS3 hype, and at £50 I can’t see that changing.
Be warned, these babies at Asda are flying out the door as I type so if you want a cheap second console, run you fool, run!- Martin Lynch

iPhone Name Goes To Apple…..and Cisco February 22, 2007

Some back-room wrangling and a wad of cash later [alleged cash, that is, wink, wink], Apple has emerged from its legal tussle with Cisco over the iPhone name with - a share of the iPhone name. That’s right, both companies will get to use the iPhone name.
A specific sum wasn’t mentioned for ‘confidentiality reasons’, but you can be sure it’s more than enough to buy some ruffled Cisco execs a few beachside properties in the Caribbean. They might even get a free iPhone out of the deal.
Both companies, in an effort to make this seem less of a pay-off and more of a positive-spin collaborative decision, announced that they will ‘explore’ opportunities for interoperability in the areas like security, consumer and business communications. Whatever. -Martin Lynch
