The CEO desk (actual name) may not actually be constructed of Legos, but they certainly inspired the design. Creators Staffan Holm and Johannes Tjernberg had this to say about the piece, explaining that the furniture is indeed suitable for those in high power, making more money than me positions:

We created the desk bound by the structural laws of LEGO-building bricks, combined this with the grace of the late Rococo furniture style and painted it glossy black to evoke feelings of exclusivity and power.

Shut up, just shut up. You had me at LEGO. – Mark Wilson

Stain Teacup: Age is Beautiful? February 24, 2007

From artist Bethan Laura Wood, these teacups are meant to show their age.

The interior surface of the cup is treated so as to stain more in predetermined places. The more the cups are used, the more the pattern is revealed. Over time they will build up an individual pattern dependent on the users personal way of drinking tea.
In a culture that prizes the new, I'd love to see such principles applied to popular electronics. Instead of the constant fear of scratching your beloved iPod, the only user who could reveal intricate designs would be be long-term user.

Of course, the artistic rust coloring would be spoiled with the realization that my hands are indeed that filthy on a regular basis...we'll just stick with the tea. – Mark Wilson

Spock’s Space Suit Beams Up For $10,100 February 24, 2007

Trekkie alert. For those of you that collect movie memorabilia, then you’ll be interested to know that Spock’s space suit from the original Star Trek movie has just sold on eBay for $10,100. The rest of us can go back to sleep, safe in the knowledge that we just saved £5,000.

I’m not sure if that’s a lot for a Trek suit but I’d imagine not. The suit was worn by Spock on leaving the Enterprise to pull off a mind-meld with the V’Ger Probe. There were, surprisingly, only 14 bidders. It would be therefore overstating it if it could be called a bidding war, especially since bids stayed below the $5,000- mark for the first 10 bids.

Just before closing the hard-core collectors emerged and within four bids the price topped $10k. See lots of photos and details here. Personally, I'd prefer the Star Trek Home Cinema, which cost just $7,500. -Martin Lynch

Sony Flips The Bird To PS2 Gamers February 24, 2007

Let’s see. If the typical European PS3 buyer was a character in a movie it’s safe to say that he wouldn’t be the lead. Not even the amply proportioned love interest nor the bad guy’s third henchman from the left. No, he’d be the blind, disfigured, legless, lice-ridden leper begging for alms in some rat-infested warren of alleys. You know, a blink-and-you-miss-him role.

Not only have we had to wait significantly longer than the rest of the planet for the PS3 launch but we’ll be paying a lot more too. Even worse, gamers in the UK will be paying more than those in other European nations. And now, if that wasn’t enough crap to swallow, Sony has announced that the PS3 will be unable to play as many older PS2 games as the PS3s launched in the US and Japan. Why? In a cost-cutting effort, the PS2 chip has been removed and emulation software will take over the job of backwards compatibility. We covered the original news that said the PS3 would have some problems with older games but this will be a lot, lot worse.

David Reeves, president of SCEE, gushed: “Games designed for PS3 offer incredible graphics quality, stunning gameplay and massively improved audio and video fidelity that is simply not achievable with PS and PS2 games. Rather than concentrate on PS2 backwards compatibility, in the future, company resources will be increasingly focused on developing new games and entertainment features exclusively for PS3, truly taking advantage of this exciting technology.”

Don’t worry though, you can check if your old catalogue of PS2 titles will run on your PS3 here, but not until launch day, March 23rd. Gizmodo would appreciate any and all feedback on this.-Martin Lynch
