The BBC has inked a deal with YouTube to provide videos of its content through some special BBC-branded channels. You might argue that much of the Beeb’s content is already on YouTube thanks to free-spirited viewers, but the BBC wants in on the action. As a result, there will be three BBC channels of content on offer, but no date yet on when they’ll be available. They are – and here’s the official, PR-heavy blurb:

From the BBC: Clips of new shows and specially commissioned promotional content linked to popular series such as Doctor Who and Life On Mars. At launch, the YouTube community will be able to enjoy a range of specially- created video diaries including David Tennant and Freema Agyeman, who'll take viewers around the set of Doctor Who; John Simm going back in time for Life On Mars; and Clive Myrie on the streets of the red zone of Baghdad.

From BBC Worldwide: An entertainment channel called "BBC Worldwide" showing clips from material such as Top Gear, Spooks, The Catherine Tate Show, The Mighty Boosh and a range of factual programmes including those presented by David Attenborough. The channel will include a limited amount of advertising.

From BBC World, the BBC's international commercial television channel: Around 30 news clips per day will be offered, with up-to-the-minute news and analysis from around the world. The advertising-funded clips will be available to users outside the UK only.

Anyone else notice the two plugs for ad revenues? From the Beeb?. Shocking, I say, shocking. What’s the world coming to? :) -Martin Lynch

RumourMill: PS3 Will Upscale PS2 Games To HD March 2, 2007

sony ps3 upright.jpg Sony’s taking another kicking this week, especially after the whole “PS3 will not play most PS2 titles” debacle. Maybe it can redeem itself somewhat, if this rumour comes to pass.

Like all rumours though, have the salt ready, but this is certainly a nice one. The PS3 has an in-built upscaler and according to one deep throat, a firmware update for the emulator this summer will see the PS3 offering 720p/1080i upscaling on certain PS2 titles. To start, the number of games will be few but Sony is aiming to offer emulation for more games in batches.

If true [fingers and toes crossed] the PS3 – offering Blu-ray playback and upscaling of older games in the one box - might make it attractive after all. But only maybe. Will keep an eye on this development and keep you posted.-Martin Lynch

iPod might rule but Sony is happy to play the role of troublesome, upstart pretender to the throne with the launch of its own Video Walkman. The NW-A800 Network Walkman series comes in three flavours, 2GB, 4GB and 8GB, and sports a 2in Q-VGA display with 320x240 pixel resolution.

It can playback videos encoded in AVC (H.264/AVC) baseline profile and MPEG-4, at up to 30 frames per second (fps). It’s reasonably thin too at 8.3mm and weighs in at 53g. Still, that’s thicker and heavier than the nano, but nano doesn’t do video.

Sony’s been doing a lot of good things on the battery front over the last year and this is no exception, with a claimed 30 hours playback for music and 8 hours for video. The prices for the 2GB NW-A805, 4GB NW-A806 and 8GB NW-A808 are £119, £149 and £199. Hardly a bargain.-Martin Lynch
