Sony recently freaked out Gizmodo readers and PS2 gamers when it decided that one of the best ways to cut costs on the pricey PS3 was to replace a dedicated PS2 graphics chips with some emulation software.
Of course, the downside of this is that many PS2 games will be incompatible with the PS3 which launches in a few days. This was seen as hugely unfair to loyal Playstation fans. It’s hard to say exactly how many games will be affected and to what extent but you can now find out since Sony has launched a Web page that lists the PS2 games and their level of compatibility.
That compatibility, like those that thought up the silly cost-cutting scheme, is measured by 'squares': one square bad, two squares a bit better, three squares OK. Or, in official parlance:
3 - No known issues to date
2 - Should play on PLAYSTATION3 with some minor issues
1 - Should play on PLAYSTATION3 with noticeable issues

1.if you have ps2 games then you oviersly must have a ps2 bfor.
2.ps3/sony are always adding games to there system. they say by 2008 they will have most of the ps2 game compatable with the ps3.

I just bought a ps3 console and ? paid almost 1300 us dollars because its the price where I live. I also bought fifa 07 in ps2 format. I have been using xbox 360 and its just great but I had to have a ps3. My dumb ass ps3 player wont play f?fa 07. This is The most redicilous thing I have seen. I had virtulally given up but after persevering with Sony, who amazingly told me I couldnt on the first two calls.. I actually found a guy who told me how to do it!
Its amazing that either by online hunting or speaking to Sony themselves.. There is no guidance or belief. Anyway guys, if you want to know how you can email me and I will give you instructions. Even the lag has been virtually removed so gameplay online is an amazing step forward.

Its so stupid that u cant play ps2 n 1 games on the ps3 so wat is the point in buying the god dame thing anyway.
To be perfectly honest with all of you folks, SONY will eventually solve this problem as soon as they can, for a short while within the UK (in my area, the North East) PS2s didn't even play PSOne games. This is the same ordeal... SONY release a console that fits to play its own games and that this console is initially for to bring new and also customers of other companies to buy their product(s).
Stop whining, if anything you all are lucky to have a PS3 in the first place (if you own one) I am one of those people that do usually stick with the PC and now and again play on a games console, but only with my friends; I don't whine when a game doesn't play, I go and play a different one that will, goddammit.
Everytime a product is released someone has to complain about it as soon as it's out... give it a bludy chance to be on the market at least a year before commenting on the faults because it takes a year to fix them (didn't you know?).
Be patient and have a good time on playing games that are initially made for the consoles you buy...

I have a ps3 and I'll admit that i have had a few problems with it, but it still has it's advantages but i am reli annoyed that ssx tricky doesn't work

If you can afford the extra few quid, definitely go for the 60GB version - the 40GB has zero compatibility with PS2 games, lacks some USB ports and the very handy multi-card reader.

You are all missing the point about the PS2 games. With all the other things I have plugged into the TV, it would have been better if I could have set up just one console for all my PS games. It also would have meant playing with the new wireless controller so no wires running across the room. My family also like playing games like Buzz for which there is no title for the PS3. It is a great machine and yes we look to move forward, but you can not help thinking that Sony have just dumped its loyal followers.

Can I just say to those people saying that 'you buy a ps3 to play PS3 games and that what you should buy' if you have money to throw away that is a great comment but some people can only afford to upgrade the console and not the games straight away so only have the one game which comes with the PS3. Do they expect people to just use that one game constantly until they can afford another one? Why shouldn't you be able to play PS2 games, it is a ridiculous system!! I read on another website that you can play 95% of PS2 and PS1 games on the 60gb system and NOT the 40gb system. And not only do you get ripped off by some companies selling the PS3 for a huge price but then you get ripped off with the games too!

OMG this has been going on since 2007 havent any of you decided to do so much as ask sony if you can play PS2, PS1 or PSX games (for those who dont have the time or the brains the answer is yes you can play them, but you need to create a new memory slot for PS2 + PS1 format) it doesnt take a brain wizz to work that out, also for you P*I*Kz that think you are big and hard slating the guys who want to play PS2 games, get a life why would you go out and buy a PS2 if you already have a PS3 people only want 1 console why would u clutter ur room up with loads of consoles, sony dont have a clue they create a console which has a poor loading system and a poor updating system all they got right is the blueray and the bluetooth.

What are you talking about yes Sony are the longer running company but they designed the likes of hi-fi systems and many other things but not game consoles they came along in 1994 where Microsoft Design PC software for a living starting all the way back as 1981 with IBM
