You gotta love the well-oiled machine that is the Apple PR department. Just a week after EMI and Apple kicked DRM into touch – for a price, of course – Apple rolls out the impressive stats that the iPod has sold 100 million units. That’s impressive in anyone’s book.
Anyone would think there’s a link between the timing of these iPod-related announcements.
As the ‘fastest selling music player in history’, the iPod has had five versions and 10 different models.
Steve Jobs, in the official press release, wanted to thank you all for your continued support and, as a sign of his appreciation, tell you that for one day only iTunes downloads would be completely free and he’ll pick up the tab.
Hahahahahahahahahaha…

What’s another Monday (er, Tuesday) without the latest in PS3 news, gossip and downright lies? The good news is that the best story has to do with UK retailers knocking £25 off the price of the pricey PS3. That’s right, just three weeks after the console launched, WH Smith and Play.com are offering it at £399.99.
The WH Smith offer was an Easter-only offer that ends today but the Play.com one is certainly the juicier of the two since it’s throwing in a free HDMI cable, free delivery and the Blu-ray movie, ‘Click’ for the knockdown price. After all, with UK sales falling off a cliff last week, someone has to do something.
There are a two rumours doing the rounds today – both worth noting and then possibly discarding, since they are rumours, after all. The first is that Sony is planning to kill off the 20GB version of the console – you know, the one you can’t get here anyhow. Some US retailers are no longer stocking it and Sony has removed it from its SonyStyle Web site.
If true, then it might tally with the rumour of Sony readying a 80GB version of the PS3. The other rumour today is that Sony is planning to knock $100 off the cost of the PS3 by October. This would bring it into the same pricing territory at the forthcoming Xbox Elite. Still, $100 seems like a lot and smacks of desperation.
Is Sony that desperate yet? What’s your take?-Martin Lynch

IBM and the Mayo Clinic have announced that they will be using the Cell Broadband Engine, the same processor that can help cure Alzheimer's and blast away the Germans in Call of Duty to now speed up object recognition and increase image precision with medical imaging software. The results of this implementation will be presented later this week at the International Symposium on Biomedical Imaging (sounds like a party-fest) in Washington, D.C.
For an example of what this means: Previously it took the old processor configuration 25,200 seconds to complete a object recognition task of 98 images and on the Cell processor it only took 516 seconds to complete the same recognition task. Efficiency is key with this upgrade. Faster recognition by all kinds of imaging machines (CT scanners, MRI machines, etc) means saved lives. Easy as that. –Travis Hudson

You only grill when it's sunny out anyways, so a solar-powered grill only makes sense. This isn't an electric grill rigged up with some solar panels either, it's a grill that's designed to use the heat of the sun to heat the surface of the grill without any gas or coils involved.
It's equipped with a mirrored coating that focuses all the sun's rays toward a panel in the middle that acts as the cooking surface. It all looks like a really elaborate science fair project, but it's a pretty sweet idea and much cooler than your standard grill. –Adam Frucci

Ebay might the home of bargains but it’s also home to a special breed of idiot. One of the golden rules of taking part in online auctions is: never bid while drunk. Well, someone must have been rightly rat-arsed to pay £5,100 for a second-hand Sony laptop. The auction seemed legit – nothing fancy on offer, no special offers just this sales message:
“You are bidding on an EXCELLENT CONDITION Sony VGN-FJ270/B notebook. Had this notebook for less than 4 months. Got it brand new for Christmas and had limited use. Everything is still in like brand new condition”
Well, at least one half of this sales transaction will be very happy while the other is, no doubt, nursing the hangover from hell and wondering why his credit card is being refused. Ebay has removed the listing since.-Martin Lynch
