The portable DVD player market is like a popular pub before closing time these days: too many competing for the attention of too few. And, with portable media players (PMPs) starting to take hold, is there any need for another dedicated DVD player?

Sony thinks it has something different to offer, with the Exorcist-like DVP-FX850. Just announced in Japan, but due over here in June, this player comes with a nice looking 8in screen that can swivel through 180 degrees.

The whole thing is neatly packaged at 226 x 32 x 165mm, weighs in at around 1Kg and promises 6 hours battery life to go with the crisp video images on its 800 x 480 pixel resolution display. It has a USB port which means it’s not completely useless for handling digital content via sticks and external drives. Thankfully, it also supports DivX.

That said, and as good-looking as it is, is it worth the proposed £225 price tag?-Martin Lynch
