As I mentioned here on Tuesday, there were rumblings that the 20Gb PS3 was being quietly strangled, not least because it had mysteriously disappeared from the SonyStyle Web site. Today, Sony fessed up that the reports – not the strangling – were true.
Due to crappy sales in the US, the 20Gb PS3 has been axed there. Customers who bought it will still get ‘100%’ support as try to hide the shame of forking out around £270 for a console that’s been discontinued after just five months.
Of course, it’s easy to be smug since Sony didn’t even bother giving us Europeans a chance to ignore it. Here’s the official blurb:
“At launch, we offered two separate models of PlayStation 3 to meet the diverse needs and interests of our PlayStation fan base. Initial retail demand in North America was upwards of 90% in favour of the 60GB SKU, so we manufactured and shipped-in accordingly”.
“Due to the overwhelming demand for the 60GB model from both retailers and consumers, we have ceased offering the 20GB model here in North America.”
Now, who thinks that rumoured 80Gb version of the PS3 is more likely? -Martin Lynch

Well, I think they should have kept the 20gb version for Europe. I would have got one. I'm not fussed about having a card reader built in or wireless. Anyway, can't you upgrade the hard drive anytime you like?!
No 20GB for Europe! I can't even afford the 60GB.......Damn.
