wow graveyard.jpg It’s no surprise, I’m sure, but when it comes to online gaming World Of Warcraft (WoW) is still king of the hill. According to the most recent stats from Xfire – the in-game chat and voice comms tool used by around 7 million gamers – WoW is way out in front when it comes to hours spent destroying stuff.

In terms of average hours played each day by registered Xfire users, WoW clocked in almost 391,000 hours of play in March. In second was Counter-Strike Source, a long way back but with a very respectable, 157,000 hours. Close-by in third was Call of Duty 2 Multiplayer with 145,000 but after fourth, things look really gloomy for the rest of the field. Battlefield 2 in fourth clocked up just 63,000 hours.

When it comes to rival massively multiplayer online (MMO) games, WoW’s closest rival was the great Guild Wars with an admittedly measly, 47,000 hours.

Will the forthcoming MMOs, Lord of the Rings Online: Shadows of Angmar or Age of Conan shake things up? It would be interesting, but I wouldn’t bank on it.

I think Lord of the Rings Online will shake things up... but only when Xfire actually bothers to support the game.

Nothing can compare to WoW, it, to simply put it is the Lord of all games and it is a fact that the game was based on addiction instead of fun, seriously...WHAT GENIUS!

to be fair, most guild wars players use TeamSpeak or Ventrilo; Xfire is never a requirement to join experienced teams in-game.

thing is, most Guild Wars players dont use Xfire as Guild Wars creates close knit communities and allows for a real life outside of the game, even if you want to be good. WoW just creates a grind. Vent or TS are a requirement for players into the game.
