Nintendo Bringing DS Demo Downloads to Boring Old Airports May 16, 2007

Nintendo has found the perfect audience to unleash its hordes of DS demos on, people at airports. They're bored, they've got no where to go, and if they own a DS chances are they'll have it with them.

The first run will be found in Delta terminals within stateside JFK, Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta and Cincinnati/Northern Kentucky International Airports. Hopefully those locations have EB Games inside them like Pittsburgh International Airport did when I lived there, otherwise transforming these demos into sales might be a little tricky.– Ben Longo

Sony’s Glass Column Speakers May 16, 2007

Sony’s been experimenting recently with what it hopes might become the new trend in home audio. These glass columns rise vertically from a marble column in the floor, emitting sound in all directions. The marketing material says it much prettier than me so here you go:

“The radiating sound defines the space through which it propagates-like ripples produced by a stone dropped in a pond.”

Dubbed, ‘Rin’, this concept is the result of an alliance between Sony Craft and Master Craft Lombardia in Italy. Marble is becoming more widely used these days in speaker products – just check out the new B&W Signature Diamond speakers – and, while I like the idea of glass speakers rising out of the ground, they’d last about a day before they were accidentally destroyed.

From the photo though, you can see that Sony still has to work out some snags with volume levels. -Martin Lynch

You don’t need to hear the call of the cuckoo, get sunburned or check the calendar to know when Spring/summer is in the air. Just check the newswires for new sat-nav launches. You can’t avoid them at the moment, as people plan those summer road-trips.

In recent weeks, we’ve had the £100 sat-nav from Maplin, the Google Earth-equipped device from Medion and the biker-friendly TomTom Rider.

Now, Mustek wants in on the scene with its reasonably priced GPS 200. It’s no looker, let’s be honest, but it does have a large 4.2 in screen, MP3/video player, car charge kit and a price tag of around £170.

Here’s the full feature list:

4.2 inch TFT LCD touch screen with 240 X 320 pixels resolution
Centrality Processor at 200 MHz
SD/MMC Port
Mini USB
Lithium-Ion 1050 mAh battery
Dimensions : 13.6 X 9.3 X 1.9 cm
Weight : 180 G
Destinator 6 navigation software of Navteq maps
30 countries of Europe stored on 512 SD memory card
Text-to-speech
Image viewer
MP3 player
MPEG4 player
Windows CE.net 4.2

If you're not already confused, you can opt for Palm's new Treo with free sat-nav software thrown in. Good luck. -Martin Lynch

Fat Workers Get Office Treadmill May 16, 2007

office treadmill.jpg There’s a push on these days to get our lardy, fat arses out of our chairs while working and gaming. We’ve had the Wii workout and now we have the vertical workstation, designed to keep you on your toes, literally, throughout the working day.

Just recall the last conference/show you attended, where the only place to put your laptop and work was standing at one of those stupid round breakfast bar stands, except with a treadmill attached for extra misery. Designed by the Mayo Clinic in the US, it was used by 15 obese people to see how many calories they burned while they worked. The volunteers burned 100 calories more each hour by walking slowly [1.6Km per hour] than by sitting. The researchers said:

“If obese individuals were to replace time spent sitting at the computer with walking computer time by 2 to 3 hours a day, and if other components of energy balance were constant, a weight loss of 20 to 30kg a year could occur.”

The desk cost around £800 to construct. I realise the novelty value of this but I think that this type of thing will be the desk of the future and that 'walking workers', for want of a better phrase, are going to become a lot more common in the coming decade. Whether we like it or not.

So chug those doughnuts while you can and before the rampaging skinny people get you.-Martin Lynch

Cat owners know that 99.9 percent of felines love to walk all over keyboards, and these two products show that cat who really wears the pants in the house. The Kitty Keyboard Cover is a "simple and elegant" solution to the cat- walking problem. It is a clear acrylic cover that sits above the keyboard and allows the cat to walk all over and sleep on without disturbing your typing.
