It seems that changes are afoot, just a month before the arrival of the next Apple consumer bombshell, the iPhone.
Adverse public opinion on the exclusive and expensive iPhone telecoms deals that users might have to stump up for is forcing Apple and US carrier, AT&T, to offer a pay-as-you-go version. There will be, according to rumours at Boy Genius, two other plans too, post-paid and a monthly option.
The idea that users might have to be tied into a two-year contract has knocked some of the shine off owning what will be an expensive phone option. The new option [alleged, that is] makes sense to dirve sales but does tarnish the exclusive image the iPhone would like to present. After all, it's no good if just any peasant can own one now, is it?
Still, will any of that prevent iPodders from ‘considering it? Not on your Nelly, according to Canalys, which found that half of European iPod owners would buy an iPhone.-Martin Lynch

i think anyone who gets an iphone and spends over a grand to use it for 18 months will look like a mug buying crap trying to impress others even if it means being clearly ripped off! its a shame because if there were less mugs out there in the uk firms wouldnt take the piss out of us and we wouldnt be called rip off britain.

ps. the iphone isnt crap it just seems overpriced in my opinion for what it is, like many things in rip off britain. im sure many would agree but many will buy it even if it means not eating for a month. how long will it be until the rumoured iphone nano makes an appearance? will the 10 ipods mug who posted earlier buy this aswell as a regular iphone? 10 ipods is excessive! i have 80gb for the car but will probably get the new 160gb if i can get it wired up to a couple of monitors on the car for the kids to watch vids if its possible. i dont see the point in paying more for a phone that does the same as the ipod when i already have one.

I think the iphone could come onto pay as you go and if it did it would probally be sometime in early 2008. My question is if I got one which is activated but not on contact could I stick in my O2 sim card on my current tariff with full internet access and expect to use all features of the iphone as they are?

Gizmodo is right about peasants. Quite frankly, I'm paying top wack for this iphone, because I know that none of my mates can afford it, so they'll all be jealous. I know it sounds very big headed. the new iphone 3G will be available on pay as you go on O2 here in the UK, its listed under a pay and go tariff on the O2 website! they just havent released information about the charges for calls, texts and data browsing, i definatly also want to go for this new pay and go option if the data surfing prices are right, because id use the email and web alot and dont want to be topping up all the time as all my money just gets spent on surfing.

A few weeks after the Iphone 3G came out, I asked an O2 store assistant when (if ever) will the Iphone be available on pay as you go.
He replied: "In December" Could this be the December 31st or earlier in the month so its ready for Christmas?
just go to 02 website and apply iphone settings to your pay and go sim from there and jailbreak your iphone @ jailbreakme.com
I know this is a bit of a late comment but I read on the o2 website it will be available on pay as you go 'later this year', so obviously they will bring it out around christmas so that everyone buys it as a christmas present.
Also what I am going to do which is a much more cost effective option, buy it on pay as you go and then get a simplicity tarriff with an unlimited web browsing or wi-fi bolt on, pay around £25 per month instead of the minimum £35 per month tarriff they offer on the iphone which is also an 18month contract... with simplicity you can opt out at any time theres no long term contract. Only thing I will need to check is that all the features of the iphone would work by doing it this way!
Can you not just take your iPhone and get it unlocked? My dad did that...and he was able to use his Pay as you Go sim card. I plan on taking mine to get it unlocked when I get one next month.
Please grow up! There's more to life than phone's it shows where all your minds are if thats all you need to worry about.
