Here's Porsche Design Mobile Group director Stephane Bret holding up his company's latest prototype, a clamshell cellphone that looks fast even while it's standing still. Not much information accompanied these pics, but as you can plainly see, this Porsche Design Mobile Phone P'9521 is a flip phone and has a squared-off design that might be attractive, but we'd have to hold one in our hands before we could really tell.

Take a look at the clamshell opened up, and see what you think.

Akustica's HD Digital Microphone Not Exactly Hi-Fi June 04, 2007

Here's a microphone described by Akustica as the first HD digital output mic, a tiny device destined to be designed into laptops and broadband mobile devices. The company says this AKU2103 mic is the first to "guarantee compliance with the TIA-920 audio performance requirement for wideband transmission in applications such as Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP)."

It's also immune to radio frequency (RF) and electromagnetic (EM) interference, letting laptop or cellphone designers locate it just about anywhere on the device, even if it's near a Wi-Fi antenna or LCD screen. But what exactly is meant by "HD audio wideband," anyway?

MPs Getting Free Plasma TVs and iPods June 04, 2007

parliament.jpg It seems that our honourable Members of Parliament (MPs) are keeping up with the latest developments in consumer electronics, which is great. The downside is that you’re paying for it.

According to a report in the Sunday Times, some ‘unnamed’ MPs are claiming plasma TVs, iPods and other ‘perks of the job’ on their expense accounts. One cheeky sod who re-mortgaged his house to release some cash, used his expenses to cover some of the mortgage repayments. One insider told the paper:

“There has been a successful claim for a very expensive, large plasma television and for a fish tank. After discussion among officials in the fees office, both were waved through. Also, in the run-up to Christmas last year, a lot of MPs suddenly started claiming for iPods. The system really is outrageous.”

Obviously, there’s a review of the whole expense payment system in the works but, until then, be assured that those free gadgets and TVs are essential to the smooth running of this country.-Martin Lynch

iPhone Lands June 29 - In The US June 04, 2007

iphone front x 2.jpg A series of adverts shown on US TV this weekend revealed that the iPhone really is arriving at the end of the month, June 29 to be exact.

It will sport a £250 price tag for the entry level model, with the higher end version costing around £300. The ads highlighted the big screen, scrolling through emails using your finger on the touch-screen, surfing the Net and watching videos.

AT&T is the chosen partner and while demand is expected to be ridiculous the question now is, can they supply enough of them? If it’s like any other massively-hyped launch product, probably not. There’s no date yet for a launch in Europe although demand is also expected to be crazy here too.

Would you buy one?-Martin Lynch

This is the audio version of 'how the other half lives' – well, 0.1% of them, maybe. Here are 10 speaker systems that would test the bank balance of even the best heeled folk.

Top of the heap is the Grand Enigma, installed in the world’s best kept cellar – really – and which costs a mere £500,000 and one that I’ve covered here.

There’s also the liquid sex that is the Ross Lovegrove designed KEF Muons which obviously meant for the poor-rich people at £65,000 a pair.

There are lots of shiny ear-candy on offer here but my faves are probably the giant, organic-looking Sphaeron Excaliburs from Acapella [above]. They cost just £160,000 and need a room that’s a minimum of 40m-square. Who says size isn’t everything?-Martin Lynch
