I always look at boring old USB drives and ask, "Why can't these be jewel-encrusted?" Ditto for my run-of-the-mill earbuds, which seem to lack some kind of large embedded crystal. Believe it or not, the Philips-Swarovski Active Crystals collection is due to arrive in the US this August, and we've got the exclusive first look at the lineup.

PS3 Sells One Million Faster Than Expected June 12, 2007

ps3-clear-black-front small.jpg Despite the high price and reports of sluggish sales recently, David Reeves, boss at Sony Computer Entertainment Europe, says the PS3 has topped one million sales in Europe and other PAL territories. And in just nine and half weeks [without the help of Kim Basinger, too].

That’s not too shabby, despite reports of sluggish sales – all of which are true though - but Sony seems to feel that’s going to change at the end of the summer with some big games and the the cool-looking online world, Playstation Home, a bit later. Current global figures put PS3 sales at under 4m. Reeves said:

“That was faster than both PS2 and PSOne. And I think that the analysts out there will also realise that it’s faster than our brothers and sisters in the competitive world.”

On the software front, he said two million units of first party software have been sold into the channel: almost 600,000 units for Resistance: Fall of Man [the Church of England's favourite game] and Motorstorm approaching 500,000.-Martin Lynch

HD-DVD Winning - Says HD DVD Group June 12, 2007

toshiba hdxe1_5 small.jpg Here we go again people. Last month it was the Blu-ray camp claiming superior numbers compared to HD DVD and today we have the HD DVD Promotional Group with some favourable stats of its own.

Of course, all of these must be taken with just a pinch of salt and the realisation that it’s way too early to tell which one will be leading by the time you decide to invest in either of the HD formats.

The HD DVD Promotional Group [in the US] said it is way ahead in the – and this is the important bit – “dedicated consumer electronics player market” with 60% of players sold. HD movie sales hit an all time high in May too, with 75,000 movie HD DVD movies shifted in the last week of May alone. This is no doubt down to the mega-price cuts and movies deals announced recently.

The number of Toshiba players sold so far has now hit a healthy 150,000. Remember, this is the dedicated player market though and does not count Blu-ray equipped PS3s. First Toshiba planning to equip every notebook with HD DVD drives and now this. It’s finally good to see HD DVD battling back against the Blu-ray media storm. While two HD formats is still bad for us consumers, increased competition isn’t. -Martin Lynch

Church Of England Smites Sony June 12, 2007

resistance fall of man church.jpg

Sony has been blasted from the pulpit this weekend by the Church of England, following the use of a virtual version of Manchester Cathedral in the million-selling PS3 game, Resistance: Fall of Man.

It seems there’s a been a bit of kerfuffle over the use of a house of worship for some serious human/alien blood-letting. The Church said gun-crime in the Manchester area is bad enough without the Cathedral being used as a back-drop to some sci-fi gunplay and is threatening court action.

It wants an apology [likely], a complete withdrawal of the game [highly unlikely] or a modification of the game [hmm, still unlikely], a sizeable donation from the profits to help with its youth programmes [more likely but not sizeable] and ongoing help by Sony in helping out the local youth [free PS3s and copies of Resistance: Fall of Man for all the hoodies, then].

Sony doesn’t want to go to court about this and is in talks with the Collared ones today regarding suitable penance.-Martin Lynch
