With just a few weeks to go before the US launch, Apple is cranking up the torture for all those iPhone fans by releasing a whole raft of new photos and the specs. There’s no doubt it’s cute and it’s probably about to sell a gazillion too, despite the price. Hell, people aren’t even going to wait for the reviews on this one. A mistake, of course, but that's hysteria for you.

Even more interesting than the new photos though was news from Apple CEO, Steve Jobs, yesterday when he confirmed that the iPhone will be able to run third-party applications.

“Developers and users alike are going to be very surprised and pleased at how great these applications look and work on iPhone. Our innovative approach, using Web 2.0-based standards, lets developers create amazing new applications while keeping the iPhone secure and reliable.”

Thats one big phone. Seems to be loosing its appeal a litter more and more after they release more information.

I don't think it will run third-party applications. Steve was 'spinning' this dissapointing news by talking about web pages as 'applications'. Web pages without flash that is.

Jesus, if you can't see through PR spin then you shouldn't be a pretending to be a journalist. All we got on Monday was a re-hash of the same news we've known all along: that the iPhone will display web pages. Big deal.

How can you can extrapolate this in order to claim that "the iPhone will be able to run third-party applications"? These will be nothing of the sort. Try running one of these "third party applications" next time you're on a plane.

Um...
It sounds like a regular PDA then with some onboard memory and different OS. I guess the revolutionary bit must be to do with its OS. No GPS, naff camera, no 3G. Hardly exciting.

Will be huge. People who are keen on Nano mp3 instead of better and not so expensive non Apple products will buy this BS phone.

When the StarTac was the :RAGE: if you were in management you had to have one. Then "fast forward" the iPaq then the Treo then the Razr and on and on. These "status symbols" are must haves for those with low self-esteem. The need to be in touch is indisputable, however . . . if I need to say more you are; as my Grandpa says, "a What Happened person" from the adage - "There are three kinds of people in the world . . ."

It's a personality phone: If you have no personality, you buy one so you can talk about it rather than the meaninglessness of your life.

Putintain is right to remind us of the RAZR. These fashion phones all look terribly exciting, but the important questions are:
1. Will the browser crash (like RAZRs)?
2. Is the battery life miniscule, given all the flashy gadgetry onboard?
3. How easy is it find, save, and transfer contacts?

Phone users should exercise caution, I think. This is Apple's first real foray into mobile phones, and it looks to me like they're making the same mistakes as Motorola. As a certain celebrity jailbird so ably demonstrates, you can have a colourful, fashionable exterior, but the processing power may be a significant disappointment.

What about all those people who simply like the look of the phone? Is it really that bad a crime to rate something based on aesthetics?

Fair enough it's not going to change the world and there are already many more powerful phones out there, but it looks stunning, has an interface that will be second to none and will just be an all round solid phone.

Why does anything like this have to be perceived as an alternative to a personality or an ego boost to make up for 'low self-esteem'? It's just a nice shiny object that will do the job. Quit your bitching.

People are missing the point; the iPhone is about OS X going mobile; it is about the iPod-killer music interface; it is also about the multi-touch screen. The battery might not be up to it, but as it uses the iPod's dock connector this may not turn out to be much of an issue in practice. Apple are bound to have a hit with it.

I can only presume the skeptics above are Microsoft Vista & XP users.

The fact that this will allow faultless syncing with my Mac and will mean I can get rid of my ipod and slow Symbian Nokia phone in one swoop is the biggest advantage.

Does anyone know if the Euro Version will have 3G instead of EDGE?

Does anyone know when the release date for the UK is yet? Would like to see it in real life and leave a while for all problems to be sorted before getting it if i do. As my boyfriend has found out getting a brand new product (Nokia N95) as soon as it comes out is a bad mistake as all products seem to have teething problems as the makers cannot wait to get them on the shelves. Little advice for all wait to get it!!!
