Resistance Grows Against Sony’s Holy Gunfight June 15, 2007

resistance fall of man box.jpg I‘ve already reported on the ridiculous reaction to the Sony PS3 game, Resistance: Fall of Man, by the Church of England but, while it would be nice to think such OTT – and opportunistic - reactions would dissipate quickly, this one has grown. Unfortunately. UK PM Tony Blair weighed in on the issue yesterday during Prime Minister’s Questions. He said:

“I think it's important that any of the companies engaged in promoting these types of goods have some sense of responsibility and also some sensitivity to the feelings of others.”

Wow, anti-violent game lectures from a man who sent kids to war – with real guns – under false pretences.

Anyway, Sony Japan has obviously taken note of Blair’s input and the PR machine is rolling into action faster than a PS3 launch stampede. Sony spokeswoman Nanako Kato said talks with the Church are about to start and commented:

“We take the church's views seriously,” but stopped short of saying what it plans to do – although you can be sure it will involve a big bag of cash.-Martin Lynch

Fair point about Blair. He hasn't apologised to anyone affected by his *real* war games...

I'm not sure I understand the complaint. In the context of the game, is it actually supposed to be Manchester Cathedral, or is it just a cathedral in a fictional setting, but they modelled it on Manchester Cathedral?

Andy

They are peeved as the cathedral is used as backdrop for gun violence in a sci-fi game. In real life, it's the backdrop for the real-thing every Saturday night.

I think this is ridiculous. The news in the UK has been saying that the game "depicts the killing of people in a church". What could be more christian than attempting to wipe out an entire race because it "threatens" our "freedom".

"We do not move from the position that we are against violence and especially the gun violence seen in this portrayal of the Cathedral."

How should one take this excerpt from the quote attributed to Govender?

"We are against violence [in general]"?
Not a great track record your religion has, mate. Try Quakerism or something.

"We are against violence [in places of Christian worship]"?
Grow up, then. It's a sci-fi game set in the fifties for fjörk's sake. Quoth Sony: "We do not accept that there is any connection between contemporary issues of 21st Century Manchester and a work of science fiction in which a fictitious 1950s Britain is under attack by aliens."
