It’s wacky survey time and according to the latest stats – apply that pinch of salt now – around 7 million Brits wouldn’t mind splashing out for the iPhone. That’s the conclusion from analyst bunch M:Metrics, which found that 56% of British mobile phone users and 64% of American users are aware of the iPhone. Around 30 per cent of the UK number – around 7 million – are keen on owning one, despite the potentially high price tag and lack of a launch date.

According to said Paul Goode, vice president and senior analyst, from M:Metrics’ London office:

“We expected that mobile users in the UK would be more inclined to buy an expensive device, since smartphones are twice as popular in the UK as in the US. These figures are very impressive, although respondents in the UK were not presented with a launch price or any restriction of mobile phone carrier as in the US.”

He added:

“It's also interesting to note that in both geographies, 64 percent of those with a strong interest in buying an iPhone already own an MP3 player, compared to a market average of 30 percent for other music phones owners, so it will be interesting to see at what rate consumers replace their digital music player with an iPhone.”

I would say this survey is probably pretty accurate. The iPhone has to be the most anticipated product this year, maybe even this decade.

although respondents in the UK were not presented with a launch price

Hmm. How many of this seven million would baulk at shelling, say, five hundred notes? "Keen on owning one" isn't the same as "prepared to buy one". Unless all seven million are expecting Mum and Dad to cough up, I suppose.

Surprisngly being an Apple Fanboy and all, i'm just not excited by this until i see them in the wild. When the early adopters have got their little mitts on them, and the reviews are plastered all over the web. THEN i'll be excited.

If i'm gonna shell out 500 notes for a phone, then i'd rather i kinda knew what to expect, for an SE P1 or a Nokia n95

If the iPhone's gonna be $600 then that means it's gonna cost £300 in the UK right?? Hmm, bet it doesn't, it'll probably be nearer £5-600!!! That makes me MADD!! The UK seems to be a bit of a corporate cash cow to the rest of the world's businesses. I think there needs to be a revolution against this!.......Mind you, that iPhone is BLOODY cool! :)
