PS3 Price Drop Confirmed – Will Be Months Though June 19, 2007

sony ps3 upright.jpg The PS3 is overpriced. It’s a fact. It’s also the key reason why sales have been sluggish and, although the gaming world has been clamouring for some form of cut, Sony has firmly denied such heinous suggestions.

However, this weekend, Sony chairman and chief executive, Howard Stringer, admitted that there is “no question” that consumers want a new, pocket-friendly price tag. While magnimously praising the Wii and Nintendo’s business model, he firmly denied ["No,no,no,no"] that the Wii is more fun to play than the PS3. The overall good news though is that a price cut is coming and it will be before Christmas. Stringer was quoted in the FT as saying:

“[The amount of the price cut] is what we are studying at the moment. That's what we are trying to define."

I vote for £398. Odds-on favourite right now is a $100 reduction. Let’s just hope ‘before Christmas’ means, say, July? Optimism, or what? Personally, I think it’ll be a November cut for the 1-year anniversary but with any luck, continued pressure from the Xbox 360 and the Wii will force Sony’s scissors towards an early snip. -Martin Lynch

I'd love a PS3, but it'd have to be £300 before I'd bite. I got stung with buying a PS2 on pre-order release day since it had all the first-revision problems and was bust within 9 months.

Issuing a statement now about a future price drop before Christmas just doesn’t make sense to me. I for one will wait until then before making a decision to buy or not. Surely it would have been better for business to announce software/hardware bundles now, to boost sales.

So a price cut for the PS3 is months away... probably about the same time as a decent game for it too!... haha...

Of course, you're all assuming the price cut is going to be global and not just for the US. I vote no price cut for Europe.

Anyone who thinks £425 for a video games console is value for money needs their head checking. In my opinion, any games console should never exceed a £200 retail price. The pricing for the first Playstation was spot-on at £199, but things have gotten rediculas. I particularly feel sorry for the working class people who earn very little money and whose kids can only dream of getting something which, realistically, should not be so difficult to get.
