The 3-Second Cuppa Tea June 19, 2007

tefal kettle.jpg Time seems to stand still when you’re waiting for the kettle to boil, leaving you shuffling around impatiently, craving that first caffeine injection of the day. OK, it might only be 3 minutes but it’s still true. In fact, research says it’s 2m 47secs. Still too long.

Tefal is about to launch its latest kettle through Currys, which promises you a cup of boiling hot tea in 3 seconds. Oh yes. You fill the Tefal Quick Cup kettle as normal then hit the red button. The kettle sucks up enough water (220ml) for one cup through a coiled heating element so that by the time it hits the spout, it’s boiling.

Not only that, but it also houses a water filter and the company says it uses up to 65 per cent less energy [or £30 a year] than a regular kettle. You will have to pay a bit extra though since it will cost £60 when it lands on July 1.-Martin Lynch

So if it heats 220ml of water from, say, 15C to 95C that's 80 x 0.22 = 17.6 kCal of energy required, or roughly 74 Kilowattseconds. So if you are drawing, say, 3kW (don't try this in Spain) you will wait about 25 seconds for the full 220ml to emerge. Which is neither instant, nor easier than a traditional kettle which takes a quick flick of the switch to turn on, and boils while I sort out the sugar, tea bags, milk the cat, etc.
Mind you I did fail my physics O level....

I'm still waiting for the 3 second home enema kit myself.

i want one of these!
only heats the water you need which is great for any energy saving lifestyle.
but,
doesn't the water actually have to be boiled for making tea? this apparently does not boil.

@ Kat,

I think youve got it wrong mate, isnt the formula E = M*C*delta*T

that gives you the energy required to heat a substance over a period of time or vice versa

So this thing costs you £60, saves £30 a year and the warranty lasts a year after which internal parts are probably designed to 'fatigue' rendering it useless.
Oh and brewed tea in 3 seconds?
I'm keeping my kettle.

Also, you have to buy proprietary disposable filters for it, which stopped me from buying it.

I saw this in currys yesterday - Guess that it saves money for lazy people. I get the same saving with my normal kettle by just boiling the exact amount of water for a cup of tea. Uses the same amount of energy, and doesn't cost £60!

I like the idea but my kettle cost £8 from tesco and therefore saved me £52. Also running water makes me pee so i would be in the loo when the coffee was ready!

I'm a busy bee so having to wait 3 minutes every time I have a cup of coffee is a drain on my hectic lifestyle.

5 cups of coffee a day x 3 minutes a boil would save me about 60 hours a year or cost me £3,000 at an hourly rate of £50/hour.

Get one of those for the staff room and you've saved the company hundreds of thousands of pounds a year!

i have just bought one of these kettels today and there brilliant! you have to get one!!!!!
