After a few days of ‘will it/won’t it’, Dell has confirmed some earlier reports that it is indeed launching a series of notebooks with multi-coloured lids.

This is an unusual step - not just the splash of colour - for the normally tight-lipped and arrogant PC maker but it seems that the new, fluffier Dell is actually trying to make itself more open to customer feedback. And leaks. You can find no better example of this than the ‘23 Confessions’ article on the direct2dell Web site by Dell’s digital media manger, Lionel Menchaca.

The new rainbow notebooks will include the 14.1in Dell Inspiron 1420, the 15.4in Inspiron 1520 [pictured] and the 17in widescreen Inspiron 1720. These will all use the new Santa Rosa chips from Intel, while new Inspiron 1521 and 1721 models will be powered by AMD.

There’s also a sexy little “performance” ultraportable [faster but heavier] on the way called the XPS M1330, a 13.3in widescreen device with nVidia 8400m graphics, a slot-loading optical drive, up to 4GB of Dram, Web camera and LED display. It’s about 1in thick and weighs roughly 4lbs. The official launch of all of the above is next week.-Martin Lynch
