Spinning LED Clock Simulates LSD...Clock June 25, 2007

Maybe our headline is a bit of an exaggeration, but the handmade Spinning LED Clock uses a mere 33 lights spinning at 30 revolutions a second to simulate—dramatic pause—8000 individual lights.

We like the idea because it's far cheaper than producing a clock with 8,000 LEDs, while the design still remains flexible. Because the image is produced solely by light patterns, the unit has multiple modes of display: digital, analog, pendulum and even text messages up to 240 characters in length (may we suggest, "Check it out! My freakin' clock can talk!). And for $100, that's not such a bad deal if the motor really is ultra quiet.

Sun-Red Solar-Powered Bike Won't Go Far or Fast June 25, 2007

I can see the point behind this motorcycle from Catalonian company Sun-Red (very responsible and all that, clap clap clap) but, fug-o-rama design aside, I worry for this eco-friendly concept bike, which got a special mention for innovation when they were handing out prizes at a Barcelona car fair recently.

A wide-ranging survey by Carphone Warehouse into the impact and use of mobile phones in our lives has uncovered a surprisingly large number of mad people.

It seems one-in-three people would not give up their mobile phones for £1 million, or more. Hell, I’d give up mine and a few others from unwilling passer-bys for that kind of dosh. Gee, a million quid for no more disturbances in the middle of the night from mashed mates? Gee, let me think…..bring on the lolly! Here’s some other findings:

Mobile Phone Habits
Number of mobiles: 14% of people have two or more mobile phones that they use regularly

Number of calls: On average people make 2.8 calls a day

Number of texts: On average people send 3.6 text messages a day

Phone replacement: 70% of people replaced their mobile phone within the last 18 months

PAYG vs contract: Of people who own their own mobile phones (as opposed to having
a company phone) 48% have PAYG and 52% have monthly contracts

Choosing a mobile: When choosing a mobile phone, the most important factor for people
phone is function ( 31%), price ( 29%) and style ( 16%)

The juicy stats though, on mobile etiquette, daily life, health and driving, are after the jump.-Martin Lynch

The WiiHelm: Save Energy But Look Mental June 25, 2007

Gaming was never meant to be about getting fit which is why this WiiHelm – yes the WiiHelm – has been designed with happy lazy folk [a.k.a. traditional gamers] in mind.

Trad gamers will see the advantages of the WilHelm immediately since it allows you to play all those sporty Wii games while sitting on your ass. None of that arm-waving, dancing and smashing the TV here.

Just attach the controller to the helm and tip your head to play the games, leaving your hands free for the all important beer and pizza. You even get some foot pedals thrown in for some dexterous toe-manipulation.

That said, the downside is that you will look mentally retarded. Watch the video if you don’t believe me. Yours - or not – for around £13.-Martin Lynch

Sony Promises 380 New PS3 Games June 25, 2007

motorstorm.jpg As anyone tracking or owning a PS3 will tell you, there’s not enough games to choose from. And of those out there, some completely fail to take advantage of the PS3’s high-def capabilities. Right now, there are around 150 titles out there – globally - with only a few that could be classed as ‘very good or great’. However, Sony has promised another 380 titles by March 2008.

This will be comprised of 200 packaged retail titles and around 180 downloadable titles. Be aware though that a fair few of these will be for Japan only – no exact figures yet. The company recently announced that its gaming division posted a whopping $1.88bn operating loss for its last financial year, thanks largely to the rising costs of getting the PS3 ready. A weak games line-up has also been blamed for weaker-than-expected sales. Chief executive Howard Stringer said last week:

“Attractive game software is the key to accelerate PS3 growth over the next year. All the production problems have been solved. We are making a comeback already. We always lose money in the hardware initially, and we recover that money gradually, we believe that the PS3 going forward will be vital to our future, and succeed.”

It’s good to know that there’s a lot more PS3 content on the way, but it’s going to have to be a lot better than the dross already available if Sony wants gamers to swallow that ridiculous price tag. -Martin Lynch
