Well, here’s a topic bound to have a few avid gamers throwing mice and keyboards at each other. Gaming magazine Edge has just published The Top 100 Games of all time and the winner is…..The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time.
The 10-year old game for the ’Nintendo 64 platform scooped the prize for a number of reasons, including one that said it helped bring about a new era of 3-D gaming. It is one of only five games that Edge ever gave a 10/10 score to. The issue was decided by thousands of votes from readers, expert opinion from the game industry and Edge’s editorial team.
The Top 10 are as follows and yes, some of you will be shocked, and possibly dismayed:
1) The Legend of Zelda: Ocarina of Time (Nintendo 64)
2) Resident Evil 4 (GameCube, PlayStation 2)
3) Super Mario 64 (Nintendo 64)
4) Half-Life 2 (PC)
5) Super Mario World (Super Nintendo)
6) The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past (Super Nintendo)
7) Halo: Combat Evolved (Xbox)
8) Final Fantasy XII (PlayStation 2)
9) Tetris (Various)
10) Super Metroid (Super Nintendo)
I guess I’m surprised that there’s only one PC game in the Top 10. No Warcrafts, Command & Conquers, Dooms…
Tony Mott, Editor-in-chief, said: “Ocarina of Time is nearly 10 years old, but its position at the top slot in Edge's 100 Best Video games shows that great game design does not age. In visual terms, it obviously cannot compete with today's Xbox 360 and PS3 productions, but, as with many classics, its appeal is about so much more than its appearance.”
So, tell me, what have they missed?-Martin Lynch

Glad to see Mario 64 in there...but where is goldeneye?!?!?!
nothing.
Jet Set Willy on the Commodore 64 of course!
Deus Ex!
They missed the fact £10 for a list magazine is exorbitant. Goldeneye is in the top 100, just outside the top ten if I remember from reading the magazine in the newsagents. Before anyone mentions it, FFVII is in there.
Ico!
Ico is in there, top 20 I think, along with the sequel, Deux Ex is in the top 100. Don't remember Jet Set Willy. Damn... Do I have to go to the newsagents and read it all again! I'm certainly not buying it! Otherwise Edge is a great magazine and I'd recommend you get a subscription. "Games TM" is good too. They are the top two videogame magazines in the UK. Re: Zelda... I'm still stuck on the Bongo Bongo Boss, it's been years, I just can't do it for some reason. Thankfully I don't have any friends where that alone would seem like a shameful secret (they all think games are for children, ipso facto I should be ashamed of even knowing Zelda exists).
I don't usually post comments, but this list is absolutly shocking!
What happened to the games that set benchmarks, and relied on playability as opposed to fancy graphics?
Whoever made this list hasnt got a clue what their talking about.
Where is Sensible Soccer? where is Zork?, where is Doom? Where is Monkey Island?, infact where is any game that changed the face of gaming?
Looks to me like this list was compiled by some nintendo big wig. Next they'l be trying to tell us Superman 64 was the best game of all time.
This list is a joke
Half life!?
yes they have half life2, but half life was still a benchmark game!
all seems a bit too console orientated hum :/
Only in WHS, "Games TM" have released their own version of the top 100. It doesn't rank them and it's £12.99 for a magazine... WTF?! What are they thinking? A stupid price.
So...Edge... No Zork, but Sensible Soccer is 98.
13. Ico (colossus is in the 100 too)
17. Goldeneye.
29. Deus Ex 1 (I really liked Deus Ex 2, regardless of the criticisms).
78. Doom2 (no Doom 1).
79. The Secret of Monkey island.
I flicked througn, but saw no mention of Elite, my personal favorite.
that is an odd list....
but still the best remains best..
Ocarina of time.
..id question half life 2.. there was more to that then just new graphics and physics... but half life one did most of what 2 did.
also where is perfect dark? and.. jet force Gemini lol.
The one obviously missing from the number one spot is World of Warcraft ... that's because its millions of players enjoy the game so much they are online playing it and don't have time to vote in nonsensical polls!
goldeneye and half life 1 should both be up their too
