PS3 Gets Price Cut – US Only, Dammit! July 9, 2007

ps3 upright.jpg It was bound to happen and, despite Sony’s recent protestations to the contrary, it has.

The PS3 is getting $100 lopped of its US price - a 17% reduction designed to help boost the sluggish sales Stateside where the diminutive Wii and older Xbox 360 continue to outsell the pricey PS2 successor.

This brings its US price to $500 [£250], just $20 higher than the Xbox 360 and should boost sales in the coming months. Will it take sales away from the forthcoming Xbox Elite? According to Jack Tretton, Sony Entertainment America chief executive:

“Our initial expectation is that sales should double at a minimum. We've gotten our production issues behind us on the PlayStation 3, reaching a position to pass on the savings to consumers, and our attitude is the sooner the better.”

He also officially announced that the 80GB version of the PS3 will arrive in August with a price tag of $599.

The pricing move is well overdue but I imagine Europe is going to get nothing for months to come, if at all. What’s new there then?-Martin Lynch

thing is in the uk we will see what, a £40 reduction if we are lucky - personally id only be willing to pay £300 for a ps3 & 1 game, because their game choice is so weak (i own a xbox360 so most titles are cross platform) i think id rather consider the 360 elite when it comes out and sell my existing 360 premium. thing is i look around my home and the only thing sony i have is an old md player - bloody good player it was too, but battery only lasted a year (rechargeable) and when it came to replace it mp3/hd players came in - so it just sits there. safe to say im not a real sony fan, youd think they would try to win people over - but as usually sony overcharge (when compared to similar products) i mean £1k for a 32" tv, of which not many people can take full advantage of, when a budget one would set you back less than £400 these days!

I still have hundreds of games to finish from sega megadrive, SNES, Saturn, Dreamcast, PS,PS2, N64, Gamecube, xbox, so I wait until the PS3 has had several cuts, the Xbox360 doesn't blow up and the Wii has more than 10 games worth buying. I maybe waiting many years...

The PS3 will certainly have a large price cut before Christmas (and after when nobody buys it, as it's still too expensive).

us in UK subsidise sony's loss elsewhere that's why we won't see a price-cut for now. Paying £425, which is like $850 is just too much for most people but if you love your electronics you will buy. Back in March i opted to get the N95 instead of PS3 but i'll get it in October when GTA4 comes out, hopefully by then the price will be down. I own a ps2 and am still happy playing games.
