iphone2.jpg The wily Norwegian hacker, DVD Jon [or Jon Lech Johansen to his parents] has gotten the iPhone hacking hobby well underway by partially hacking the iPhone. And just 10 days after Apple's latest hottie sold 500,000 units in a matter of days.

A utility he has written edits code in the iPhone’s system software that lets users access the iPod and Wi-Fi capabilities of the device without having to sign-up to AT&T’s mobile service. That said, you can’t use the phone services which essentially turns your iPhone in to a really expensive MP4 player.

This utility, which you can find here, is not for amateurs. You have been warned. You can find alternative iPhone workarounds from the iPhone Dev Wiki here.-Martin Lynch

spykee.jpg PC World is aiming to take robots into the mainstream by announcing a series of dedicated RoboShops, within some of its retail outlets.

Robots are the next big thing apparently, and it feels that there’s some serious dosh to be made from taking the types of things we’ve been covering for years to Joe Public. It looks like those Aibo and Bj mutts are in for some competition.

Among the first products will be the Star Wars-themed home cinema on wheels, the R2-D2 droid. We covered this in detail at this year’s CES and you can see extra shots of this baby, including the cool [yet enormous] Millennium Falcon remote control, here.

There’ll also be Spykee [pictured], from Meccano, which does exactly as it says on the tin. This is essentially a £200 super-grass on wheels, allowing you to control it remotely by Wi-Fi from your laptop or PC.

That way you can record conversations people are having about you covertly, while the video will give you all the evidence you need to prove that your missus is getting more than two pints [of milk] a day from the milkman.-Martin Lynch
