The wily Norwegian hacker, DVD Jon [or Jon Lech Johansen to his parents] has gotten the iPhone hacking hobby well underway by partially hacking the iPhone. And just 10 days after Apple's latest hottie sold 500,000 units in a matter of days.
A utility he has written edits code in the iPhone’s system software that lets users access the iPod and Wi-Fi capabilities of the device without having to sign-up to AT&T’s mobile service. That said, you can’t use the phone services which essentially turns your iPhone in to a really expensive MP4 player.
This utility, which you can find here, is not for amateurs. You have been warned. You can find alternative iPhone workarounds from the iPhone Dev Wiki here.-Martin Lynch
