Got a spare £50,000 lying around in your sock drawer? Well, those that live and breathe home cinema and have a mint in the basement, will no doubt be slavering over the latest future projector offering from projectiondesign, a company well known for great, but very expensive kit.
After all, this company’s idea of an entry-level projector [the Action M20] starts at £3,500.
Now we have the M80, the company’s first three-chip 1080p DLP projector for the home. The expense is down to the fact that rather than use other company’s optical engines, pd likes to build its own.
For the M80, the company is claiming that early tests have resulted in “ phenomenal imaging fidelity, pin-point colour accuracy, 50,000:1 contrast ratio” and a lamp pumping out and astonishing 8000 Lumens brightness.-Martin Lynch
UPDATE: It will not cost £50,000, just around £20-30,000. So there, a bargain.

Trekkies are gonna love this one. The long awaited Wii Zapper, Nintendo’s gun-like add-on for the Wii console, looks exactly like a phaser rifle from Star Trek.
The gun can hold the nunchucks and the Wiimote in place. The Wiimote fits on top of the barrel while the nunchucks clip on the back. The gun is used like the Wiimote – just move it to aim and press the trigger to annihilate.
The additional buttons on the Wiimote or nunchucks can be used in certain games to perform other actions including moving or picking up items. It’s cute as hell and is expected out later in the year, with a really cheap US price of around $20. Make that £20 or so here, which is still cheap.
Sony and Microsoft should take note of this because most gamers are sick of paying through the nose for overpriced ‘official’ PS3 and Xbox 360 peripherals.-Martin Lynch

Statistics are a bit like plasticine in that you can pretty much mangle them into whatever shape you like with a little imagination.
Still, it would be unfair if we didn't cover the stats erupting from both the Blu-ray and HD DVD camps in the ever ridiculous high-def format war. This week, we will be mostly covering the plasticine from the HD DVD playgroup. We were here last month too.
According to the European HD DVD Promotional Group, stand-alone HD DVD players are outselling standalone Blu-ray players by a margin of 3-to-1 in Europe’s main markets between January and May this year. Those main markets by the way are Britain, Germany, France, Italy, Spain and Switzerland [Switzerland?].
Right, so you control 74% of the market so that’s 74% of how many players sold? Ah, sorry we can’t release that information. OK, so how many HD DVD players have you sold? Sorry, we can’t release that information. As far as I can tell, and I’m no mathematician, 74% of an unconfirmed figure amounts to um, er….diddly-squat.
Oh yeah, this latest research didn’t include Blu-ray equipped PS3s. How convenient.-Martin Lynch
