Audiophiles still clinging feverishly to their vinyl LPs and lovingly polished CDs as the world goes MP3 mad will be heartened to know that Arcam has felt your fear and created a solution.
The high-end audio specialist thinks that its new 400GB music server might just be the thing to help you make that digital jump without polluting your ears. For the rest of us normal folk, Arcam’s 400GB FMJ MS250 music server is a potential solution to the CD clutter found in most of our homes.
Inside the server is a high end CD player that can play as it rips your fave Nana Mouskouri CDs. The whopping 400GB drive can store around 80,000 tunes – that’s 640 uncompressed CDs or 4,800 compressed CDs. On the quality front, Arcam sees this device as a high-end CD player first and there’s a special Arcam custom-designed sound card to ensure the best playback.
There’s an Ethernet port for hooking up to PCs or the Internet, a USB port for plugging in MP3 players and plenty of other audio connections to boot. With a clean, uncluttered design the FMJ MS250 is a good looking piece of kit but with the £3,000 price tag, this will probably only appeal to the most serious of music lovers. The USB gadget train gets longer still but this time the attraction is sex-based. Steady on, there’s no iGasm sex thrills here. No sir, that's over here.
The Brando USB Gift Sets are a lot less controversial and come in equality-friendly, His & Her flavours. The one for the ladies [pink of course] comprises a USB mini vacuum cleaner, a USB fan, a USB lighted mirror and a USB mood light pen holder with a 4-port power hub. Now before the fairer sex start freaking out over the inclusion of a hoover, the men get one too.
In addition, the blokes’ silver coloured set comprises a USB desk lamp, a USB cup warmer and a USB mood light pen holder with 4-port power hub. The sets cost around £15 apiece and, mad and useless, as they are I’d have one. Especially that cup warmer bit.

The Decepticon, Soundwave, may not have made it into 2007’s summer blockbuster, Transformers, but that doesn’t mean that he’s been completely forgotten.
It’s fair to say that Soundwave’s ability to transform into a cassette player makes him about as useful as in a fight as a tutu. However, the toy has been upgraded into an MP3 player, swapping his cassette innards for an SD Card memory slot and sporting a headphones jack and audio controls.
The Takara/Tomy's Soundwave MP3 player might still be no good in a fight but at least he’ll sound good. And don’t forget – he still transforms. Yours for around £50.-Martin Lynch
