While some people may complain that Apple’s iPods are a bit pricey, they should take a look at this one first. Decked out in 18k gold, this shiny beauty used to be a bog standard, white iPod Shuffle until some mad Germans got their hands on it.

A company called Xexoo will be happy to provide you with one too, as long as you can stump up £10,000 for the gold makeover. This isn’t just a paint job though, it’s actually made from gold, comes in a cool, shiny Piano-black box and has 24/7 support – as you’d expect for £10,000.

The company already offers gold versions of the nano and iPod Video and you can see them here.-Martin Lynch

Samsung is on the launch offensive this week with some new home cinema surround systems, including what it claims is the first upscaling 1080p offering.

The HT-TXQ120 [above] boasts 1,000Watts of power through five 150W speakers and a 250W subwoofer – all more than enough to get you evicted. The DVD player will upscale movies to [near] 1080p, as well as playback CDs and Super Audio CDs (SACDs).

On the connection front there is the obligatory HDMI output, a USB port, optical out, component video, composite video and headphone socket. It’s certainly stylish but is it worth the £700 price tag?

There’s also the £400 HT-X250R which looks the same but with 600W of power – still more than enough to charm your neighbours.-Martin Lynch

There are changes afoot in the Xbox camp. A few days after Peter Moore – Xbox 360 boss – decides to leave Microsoft suddenly, the company has announced that it is cancelling its European console event, X07.

The X0 shows have been the big platform for Xbox/Xbox 360 announcements but the company has pulled plug, without saying why. I sniff serious belt-tightening and re-trenching here. Aaron Greenberg, group product manager for Xbox 360 and Xbox Live, said in a blog:

“There is not a real X07 this year but I think that we will figure out some way to talk about 2008 some time at a different event or a different type of programme.”

The X0 events have been running since 2001. The company may offer a smaller UK-focused event in its place but so far there are no details.

Could Moore’s departure and the cancellation of the show be related to the $1.5bn Microsoft may have to shell out to replace dodgy Xbox 360s with the Flashing Red Ring Of Death?-Martin Lynch
