Oops, iPhone Display Needs to Reboot, Runs Windows XP August 02, 2007

Hey PC fanboys, now you can use this shot of a Windows XP display at an AT&T store when those smug Mac worshipers tell you about how such-and-such Zune commercial was made on a Mac, and how "all media types and artists" use Macs. Windows runs the world, baby. (Thanks, Paul!) -Charlie White

..so why did it crash in the first place

Posted by Anonymous | August 2, 2007 03:57 PM

Who said it crashed? Heaven forbid it could be that it is simply booting up in the morning.

Posted by God | August 2, 2007 04:47 PM

Come on, you know it crashed.

Windows and simple just don't go together...

coming from a mac fanboy.. hardly surprising

Posted by hasuru | August 3, 2007 07:11 AM

Who knows... maybe is running Windows on Bootcamp...

Posted by Ha | August 3, 2007 03:14 PM

So a box with Windows installed is less expensive than a DVD player?

Posted by adrian | August 3, 2007 09:03 PM

No really, why did it need to reboot? Presumably it was running a Director Shockwave movie or something similar. It's obviously a far too difficult task for something running that shit OS...

Well, just the fact that the thing had to "re-boot" shows you how crappy Windoze is. AT&T needs to have their clocks cleaned by Apple for even running the iPhone display on anything other than a Mac!

According to this picture, Windows crashes the world.

Posted by Jim | August 3, 2007 11:40 PM

Knowing that Windows would one day crash, why did they still choose it over OS X?

Posted by Oliver Clevont | August 4, 2007 08:45 AM

I use windows for my everyday activities and whenever it crashes, it drives me into a rage of fury and i end up wetting myself in rage and wishing i had a mac. i will crush anything that is a window, includeing real windows LOL! apple rules more better than windows

Every element of this photo looks fake.
WTF is that stuff on the left anyway, it looks like a "Land of the Lost" background.
By the way, AT&T stores are NOT run on OS X.
If the store depends on POS from M$ then they are destined to suffer what ALL "Smart Phones" suffer.
The iPhone does crash, I crash the Apple Store iPhones whenever I use them.
When I owned a Palm Treo 680 it crashed WAY more than the iPhone ever will.

"the fact that the thing had to "re-boot" shows..."

Facts? We can't assume much from this photo, except that the display runs on Windows XP. It may have been turned on for the day, or needed a reboot. If you're a fanboy of either persuasion, then this can only prove that Mac/Win is better than Mac/Win. If you're anyone else, then this is just ironic and funny.

Judging from the thermostat on the left, the display appears to be inside the store. Believe it or not, indoor displays only waste money when you leave them on all night. There is a good chance the display was just turned on, right before the employees opened for the day. In fact, I wouldn't be surprised if it was a store employee who took this picture.

As far as this comment:
"how's all the spyware, anti-virus, and malware treating you today"

If you open emails from someone you don't know or troll the Internet for free porn, then you probably hate those things, and deserve them too. Seriously, anyone with half a brain can avoid malware and viruses. Otherwise, how's all the clearing your PRAM, fixing permissions, meaningless log on prompt shake-offs, and fewer choices working for you on a Mac? I don't know about you, but when I was in college, studying Graphic Design and Photography and using a Mac, those sort of things really annoyed me. Ive been working in the both the artistic and technology fields long enough that my crash totals on Mac and Windows are running neck and neck. To each his own, but stop pretending your farts smell like roses.

Maybe the photo is faked.

The photo clearly isn't faked because you can see the guy holding up the camera in the reflection on the glass.

Looks like a Mac booting into an inferior OS. Gotta love those jokers @ AT&T. Really, the jerkoffs LOVE working with Apple.

Posted by lloydsworld | August 6, 2007 03:50 AM

Mac OS vs Windows. Enough already, Really!
The whole argument is so outdated.
The computer is nothing but a tool, use whatever OS you feel comfortable using - who cares what the next guy's using!?

Ok, I get your point..... but , do you use the internet.
You know, Ted's Series o' Tubes ?
I guess there's no security difference between XP & OSX.

Had I been a Linux devout, I'd have said that AT&T would be better off using FOSS. Let me remind you people, Mac v/s PC fanboys are only letting Linux get in the way. Remember the story about two dogs fighting over a bone ? It's the third one who got it in the end... BTW, I use Mac OS, Windows and Linux and each one has got its fair share of crashes and security and/or compatibility issues. lloydsworld's right. It doesn't matter what OS you're using as long as you're getting the job done... Smartly!

Posted by Penzance | August 6, 2007 05:59 AM

Sorry, I credited the wrong person. Actually, I was commenting ant's comment... Cheers!

Posted by Penzance | August 6, 2007 06:04 AM

Hmmm... Although M$ is claiming 60 million copies sold since Vista's launch in February, seems like AT&T hasn't switched yet...

Marc,

"If you open emails from someone you don't know or troll the Internet for free porn, then you probably hate those things, and deserve them too. Seriously, anyone with half a brain can avoid malware and viruses."

Do you really believe that the only place you get Windows sicknesses is from rogue e-mails and porn sites? I don't believe you are that naive, but since I'm also assuming you do have half a brain, how about this: can you honestly state you have no anti-virus or firewall software on your Winbox? Yeah, that's what I thought.

"I've been working in the both the artistic and technology fields long enough that my crash totals on Mac and Windows are running neck and neck. To each his own, but stop pretending your farts smell like roses."

I don't believe my farts are quite flowery. However, it does bug me when people try to establish their technological superiority in these discussions as a reason to believe their opinion is more credible, when one of the primary reasons many of us prefer the Mac is that you don't have to become a Network Admin to use one.

Posted by Steven | August 6, 2007 12:30 PM

i can honestly say that i have not one, but 2 windows boxes running without avs, firewalls (even windows firewall) or spyware tools. i find they take up too much overhead. i havent been infected in >3 years (i dont' need a scanner to tell me this, i use netlimiter to log outbound connections) and if worried i use an online scanner. i did install avg when my roommate got his machine infected (with security installed, no less) but i was clean. the point is, you have to actually infect YOURSELF with spyware/malware. you have to click to run the actual program or run the activeX control or have them run by default. there is no way spyware can "install itself" unto your machine without your permission.

also, if you think that you need to be a net admin to use windows, and therefore use a mac, you have just insulted the entire mac user base, as, you my friend, are an idiot.

Either way, SOMEONE is getting a royality check for what is running, and THAT is what should be at issue here, getting ripped off for something that doesn't work as advertised! And, oh yeah, let me sign that two year contract to use the public air-waves. Can I get some KY with that? If they are going to screw us, at least they could kiss us.

I laf my ass off everytime a bag of tools want to argue about OSes. I like to use Snap-On© vs. Craftsman© personally, hehe. You choose the tool to use, then STFU. I used to publish a small magazine in the early 90's on a PC. Then I went on to instruct at a college. The Mac'ers couldnt believe I could spank the hell outta 'em composing pages and articles, on a Mac. Go figure. It's about skills using the tools, NOT about the tools... "Have a Great Day" Tards, don't forget your helmet!

Yeh, u'r right, windows does run the world, its 70% bluescreen

I´m using Windows, because I used to use it since i was 7. I´m Swiching with OS X Leopard because of Vista. By the way: I´m not using any Anti-Virus-Software and i´ve never had a Virus. I´m 27/7/12 online and i also never had a Bluescreen! But i´m switching over to the FASTER OS. I´m only switching, because it´s faster, it´s not "Spyware out of the Box" and the Hardware is much nicer. I´m using Windows, because I used to use it since i was 7. On December 31st, millions of people will be throwing away their computers. Why? People like you. That's why.
Join the millions in tossing away these bloody machines!
PC/Mac alike...it's no good for ya!

Ford vs. Chevy... Where did that end up? Honda, Toyota... Maybe none of you are old enough to remember that argument.

Windows is cheaper and probably way easier for their IT department to set up.

Every computer crashes, fanboys saying Apples never crash are idiots and need to jump off a cliff.

Why do you Mac fanboys keep saying it crashed. It could just be powering up for the first time. Macs have to boot up when you turn them on too.

Posted by PicaroMT | August 6, 2007 09:41 PM

windows and mac windows and mac...vistas and leopards and tigers and bears. who cares?

Maybe the photo is faked.... OF COURSE ITS A FAKE. Its funny all this hoop laa. el oh el

Posted by Greg "Opie" Huges | August 6, 2007 11:16 PM

sometimes there are things called software updates and windows updates that need to restart the computer... and I really doubt that it is fake. If it is it is well done they even put a reflection into the monitor. That and its a lot cheaper when you are talking about thousands of such displays to use windows based computers. Mac = overpriced

Posted by Nemesis | August 7, 2007 02:51 AM

I've done limited IT work in AT&T/Cingular stores. The machines are shut off at night and started in the morning, thus you see the start up screen.

Aren't all you mac fan boy's tree huggers too. Don't you turn your mac's off when you want to go put put around in your little prius?

Posted by Mac Tree hugger | August 7, 2007 06:50 PM

what did this display actually do?
was it just showing a movie of an iphone?

so what if they use windows to display a movie?
I watch the apple keynote on my PC all the time.
Just because the person who set up this display choose windows doesn't really say anything. What actually says something is that The OS on the Iphone is soo much better than Windows Mobile even though windows mobile is already on their 6th generation. Just go to Chris.pirillo.com or live.pirillo.com
and youll see

Posted by Lcomix | August 7, 2007 11:25 PM

maybe the power was switched off?
maybe they moved the console?
Behave guys , it's the full spectrum a color of techno-lunacy thats makes the world (and blogs)such a beautiful place ..... Aahhhhhh

Windows runs the world! ..slowly. ..Very slowly. ..but surely. Sure.

Posted by Anonymous | August 9, 2007 03:11 PM

Nah, Linux. Even this website is running linux :). From the logs:

Server: Apache/2.0.54 (Unix) DAV/2 mod_fastcgi/2.4.2 PHP/5.2.3

For those that don't know, Apache is the Microsoft server equivalent.

Go penguins :)

Posted by Eagle | August 11, 2007 04:58 AM

well done eagle for pointing out the website is running linux. But apache isnt limited to linux. It comes as part of Mac OSX. And mac is UNIX based anyways, so its just a decent version of linux!

Posted by Jim | August 12, 2007 12:09 PM

hehe, all you Windows and Mac fan boys fighting about which is better, the choice is clear:

Linux Doesn't crash and it is totally transparent with everything that happens, also its not candy coated.
