Sony has finally taken the wraps off the 80GB PS3 for the US and Canadian markets. The new model, which bumps up the hard disk drive by 20GB, is available immediately in the big retailers and online for $599. The console will come with MotorStorm bundled as standard. According to the official material:

“The 80GB PS3 offers expanded options in the PS3 family of products for those who want to enjoy more downloadable content,” said Peter Dille, senior vice president of marketing, SCEA.

“The new model will provide ample storage space to meet the appetites of those who wish to download content today, and for many more years to come. With the expanded disk capacity and dynamic system upgrades, we have effectively created a system that is 'future-proof', providing consumers an exceptional entertainment value that will stand the test of time.”

The 60GB model now costs of $499, thanks to a $100 price cut in the US and Canada ONLY, back in July.-Martin Lynch

The 80GB model is still £150-odd cheaper than the UK price for the 60GB one? Being Sony's backup cash flow isn't that flattering, really... It's just very frustrating.

Hopefully they will lose the case theyre currently being sued for (the one with patent infringement over some cell technology or something) and they will lose so much money they'll disappear from the gaming world with a glorious 'flush'.

One can dream cant they....

Since when has any piece of technology been "future proof".

Marketing people - you gotta love em!

Final thought - Sony... stop screwing the Brits. What have we ever done to you (apart from buying quite a lot of Xbox 360 / Wii consoles... because they have some games worth playing!)????

When will the drones on the Internet realise that it is totally wrong to directly compare the US price with the UK one. The Pound is twice as strong as the Dollar... so if it was half the value of the Dollar, would we suddenly get the 'better deal'. :-\

You have to look at DOMESTIC factors such as the cost of living, wages etc etc.

Wake up drones!

Plus...

For £400 at amazon.co.uk, you can get a PS3 with two games, an HDMI lead- and an extra- pad. What do you want- blood?

lol the people who complain about the price are generally those whos parents refuse to buy one and the reason they are cheaper in america is beacuse they earn a lot less and althoght their cost of living is less to them £20,000 a year is a fortune. Also is there going to be a 80gb model in the uk? and when?

Economics Lesson makes no sense and seems to be typing with his/her fists.
Immigrants are bringing billions into this country; the government is just misspending and embezzling it. Otherwise we should be able to cope with the increase influx of population with ease.
Anyway, it is very annoying how newer ps3 versions have fewer features. Seems like reverse progress to increase profits. Well, the ps3 still seems like the best gaming machine on the market. Give it time and it'll also have the best games eventually.
