Wii Close To Toppling Xbox 360 August 15, 2007

wii players.jpg It may not be a surprise to anyone clocking the monthly sales stats but right now, according to analysts VG Chartz, the Wii is about to overtake the Xbox 360 in unit sales.

Just another 220,000 or so will do the trick, despite the 360 having that one-year lead. According to its figures, the 360 has sold 10.32m units globally compared to 10.1m Wiis. The company bases it’s figures on those from ‘selected’ retailers, not console manufacturers. Whether that makes them any more accurate is another question.

Let’s all remember though that the Wii is one of those great little [big?] phenomena from left-field – a console platform that appeals to non-gamers - i.e. the scary people in white suits. It's global success has been as much a surprise to Nintendo as anyone else. It also helps that it’s great fun and cheaper than the others too.

According to the stats, the PS3 has managed 4.11m sales.-Martin Lynch

I have a 360, a Wii, and a PS3

I can count the amount of times ive played the Wii on 1 hand, and the amount of times ive played the PS3 on the other. They are both super boring systems.

Where as with the Xbox 360, i play it every day,

Dont suppose anyone wants to buy and Wii or PS3 off me do they?

Comparing the two is a misleading metric.

The Wii is a fantastic idea brilliantly executed but I think it's lacking something for the hardcore gamer so can't be classed as the same.

It's like saying the George Foreman grill outsold toasters, but they're both different cooking utensils with different purposes.
With a few friends round, the Wii appeals to most with it's quirky titles that don't discriminate whether you're young/old/male/female. It's accessible and doesn't take itself too seriously - the result being sales!

With regards to hardcore gaming on the Wii, one can readily blame the third-party developers for their rather awkward PS2 ports, film licenses and cynical outlook on the Wii's user population (even Square Enix refuses to release a real Final Fantasy title for the console, instead force-feeding Crystal Chronicles rehashes down our throats); Nintendo seems to know now that it can't abandon the hardcore gamer outright (it almost did earlier on – Twilight Princess was the only "hardcore" game for months), with the final Metroid Prime scheduled for October, Super Smash Bros. Brawl's completion imminent and Super Mario Galaxy out over here for 30th November. Hardly rich pickings, but at least they know we're out here now.

I agree with Joff, XBox/PS3 and Wii are very different in the way you interact with them.

I've got a 360 and play it maybe 3 times a week, I've also got a PS2 that is pretty much solely used by my girlfriend for get-togethers, I gave away every PS2 game bar the selection of Buzz and Singstar games that she loves. Its this area that the Wii has tapped directly into, games that are fun and don't take themselves too seriously.

I've played the Wii at friends and loved it. If the brought out more serious sports games like Tiger Woods Golf it'd be better, Konck Out Kings on the Wii would rock!

I'm probably gonna by the girlfriend a Wii soon.

Wii is still cheap low def pap
